What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Democratic System in Belize? Democracy is a government by the people or a form of government in which the sovereign power resides in the people as a whole state and is exercised either directly by them or by officers elected by them. In modern use it vaguely denotes a social state in which all have equal rights, without hereditary or arbitrary differences of rank or privilege. It is from the suffix “-ocracy” by which we can determine the operative meaning of the word democracy; which is the indicator of the dominant and superior ruling class. It is derived from the Greek word kratos, meaning strength or power. Democracy is the rule by the people and it comes from the Greek word demos. Whatever its origins democracy has come to mean the principle or system by which most political parties of the western world would subscribe to regardless of their beliefs. Freedom and democracy are often used together but the two do not mean the same. Indeed, democracy is a set of ideas and principles about freedom, but it also consists of practices and procedures that were created and followed throughout history. * The people in power might impose certain rules on the majority which are not favored by them and hence overshadow there voice * Complete manipulation of the general population by the elected minority * Not all citizens are aware of the political scenario present in their country and might just vote as a result of bribery * As the elected representatives have a fixed term or in other words a few years time to stay in power they focus on maintaining their position for next elections and furthermore on personal gains
