Diversity Worksheet

Answer each question in 50 to 150 words. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued? Diversity is made up of a mixture of things. Race, religion and culture are just a few characteristics that make up diversity. Although everyone is different, our ethnic backgrounds and other characteristics are what we are categorized by. When I think of diversity, I think of a campus or a workplace where there are a variety of people with different cultural backgrounds attending school or working. I think diversity is valued because it helps people come together no matter what a persons culture, race, religion or gender is.

2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society? Ethnocentrism is when people judge or assume other’s culture, religion or other area’s of another person’s background and compare it to their own ways. This could be harmful because making assumptions can be false and could be used to attack that person, whether it be physical or verbal. This has been seen a lot between gangs, African Americans and Caucasion Americans and the list could go on and on.

3. Define emigration and immigration. When a person is leaving their original country to go live in another country, this is known as emigration. When a person goes into the new country, this is known as immigration. In other words,emigration is almost like a word for leaving one place to permantly go to another place.

4. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified? Race, ethnicity, gender and religion are some of the ways groups of people are identified. People are grouped together usually by these four ways. Grouping people by race and ethnicity are the two major ways to grou people. Both of these two, race and ethnicity, are usually noticeable before talking to a person.
