The story of Princess Santubong and Princess Sejinjang is suitable to be used in year 2 or 3 ESL classroom because of a few reasons. This mythical story of the legendary Santubong and Sejinjang mountains is actually from Sarawak, Malaysia. This story is about two princesses that being sent to the earth. They were given mandate to rule two villages that live with no peace. As they broke their promises because of fighting, they were being cursed and became mountain and island. The reasons that this story being chosen are because of the factor in development of cognitive, social, aesthetic and moral dimensions to the children.
Firstly, this story helps in developing the cognitive skills of the children. Much of the research on play shows its relationship to the development of children’s thinking and more sophisticated classification skills (Frost, Wortham, & Reifel, 2001; Perkins, 1984; Santrock, 2003) and the ability to use what they already know to construct new knowledge. It can be seen as some parts in this story portray the life of people in Malaysia hundred years ago. It will make them learn and think about the situation. For example, the children can learn on how to weave clothes or pounding the rice. Both skills are not familiarly practiced nowadays so the children gain new knowledge from here. Not only that, the story also helps the children to do critical thinking on some parts. For example, if the Princesses do not come down to earth, what can they do to stop the fight between the two villages? Also, what would it feels like to live in that period of time or is the story really happened? With the questions that come into their mind, they will try to find an answer to each of them. Therefore, that is how this story helps to develop the children’s cognitive.
