ENG 4C - Lesson 1: Journal Response
My Past, Present, and Future: Journal Response

In 2011 I made a choice to leave my high school in Perth which was PDCI, I chose to leave and go live with my mom in Ottawa. I had enrolled in a new school called Holy Trinity Catholic High School with new faces, new friends, and just a new everything. I was doing very well in classes until I started to hang out around the wrong group of people. One day I picked up a very bad habit which was smoking cigarettes, it then lead on to smoking marijuana. My friends were all very good people with jobs, great grades, as well as amazing family members but some of them weren’t all like that. The ones that were like that attracted my attention more than others by what they were doing. Smoking bong, hitting up parties, skipping class, driving around and laughing with friends, it was all what I wanted to do at the time until I realized I was wasting my life, time and was even suspended from school and then dropped out.

In 2013 I decided to change my life around; I had gotten a job as a dishwasher/ prep cook and even went back to school for my grade 11 at Sir Robert Borden High School. At the time I thought I was just getting my life back on track but really I was slowly going back downhill towards the bad friends and drugs. (Note: I haven’t done any other drugs besides marijuana which I’m proud of) During the first semester I was searched exactly every day for 23 days in the first month of September because of my history in Holy Trinity, which was selling marijuana. The best part about it was that I didn’t bring that to school anymore and had been leaving it at home for my own personal use. I still yet had another problem on my hands; I would not attend my classes. I had missed almost every class in the first semester except for my first two weeks there.

As of 2013 transitioning into the new year of 2014 I had turned 18 and had no job as I had lost it, I thought I

I joined a fraternity the following year. After joining the fraternity I put even less thought into my future and I just wanted ti enjoy my college years and worry about it later on. Around the same time I was going through a rebellious teen phase at home with my mom and that proved too stressful all together. I slacked even more and, failed a class one semester. I would go to class and did just enough to get by without caring for the consequences. Well it all hit me at once my 4th year. I was already behind on credits and had to seriously think about my future. I looked at the summary of the past few years and I became extremely disappointed in myself for wasting so much time and not taking my education serious. I told myself that this is not how I wanted to live my life anymore. I took a step back during the summer vacation to reevaluate my actions and my life and try to change my priorities to get back on track. After doing a lot of thinking I changed a lot. I decided that I wanted to go back to school and get a restart on my grades and my college education but in a different major. As a consequence I would be in school for much longer but if in the end I would study what makes me happy and I would be more content…

In the passage “The Men We Carry in Our Minds,” by Scott Russel Sanders he discusses his view on men and women. The quote above has a meaning that goes deeper than gender roles, but in this particular passage the meaning is that the way one perceives women and men is all about their experiences with women and men in their throughout their lives. The authors perception on men is different than those of the women in his class because the women in his class have fathers who hold more prestigious jobs, such as doctors and lawyers, and his father worked his way up to a job where he didn’t have to get his hands dirty. The father’s hardwork paid off when he had his higher, less demanding position, but his body gave out on him completely before he reached the age of sixty-five, as written in the passage.…

It all started 7th grade year, I wasn't trying, it was as simple as that, until I received a suspension that was for an unnecessary conflict. I then had decided to try and get good grades, and do something worth my time and put a smile on my family’s face, and because of the decision, things got better and made me felt better as a person, and made me realize I’m not only doing this for my family, I'm doing it for myself. I’m writing this letter to prove that the decision I made affected a lot of people and I've learned from my mistakes. I do not blame anybody but myself for the situation I’m currently in right now. Over the course of the years in school my grades have been affected by many different obstacles and personal challenges. My first semester was really tough for me socially and academically. My friends were doing things I knew wasn't right, but I never said anything. I wanted to be "cool", Until they started offering me to do the same. I didn't want to get in trouble, and I knew what the consequences could be, but I didn't want them to think I wasn't doing it because I would tell someone, so I just went along with it. I took the pills and i didn't feel any different nothing was happening. I told my friends that it didn't do anything so the next she gave me six more. First, it got hard for me to stay awake, I couldn't concentrate, I was scared that if I fell asleep I wouldn't wake up again. My friend just told me it was normal the first time, but then I really messed up and did it again, every time taking more because my body was becoming immune to the pain pills she had been giving me. I got so used to it, that I was asking her for more, begging her, paying ridiculous amounts for them, until we got caught. I quickly realized what had happened to me, I was in a hole, and there was no way to dig myself back out. We got in so much trouble, and since then I've learned not to trust as many people, and to definitely make the correct decisions, because I hate myself for putting myself out there when I knew it was wrong from the beginning.…

In the fall of 2014 I developed a severe case of depression and even after time in a primary care facility, I was unable to attend my senior year of high school in 2015. Instead, I moved out on my own where I wandered aimlessly without ever leaving my bed. To admit that my excursion through depression was still holding me back from reaching my potential and that I needed more help was one of the hardest things I have ever done, and also the best decision of my life.…

As a teenager not many held much hope for my future. I was constantly in trouble cutting school, fighting, drinking alcohol and just had an outright horrible attitude towards anyone that attempted to set me straight. There were many reasons behind my anger that this paper doesn’t warrant going very deep into. I knew right from wrong and I also knew that I wasn’t a “bad” person. That being said, I found myself suspended from school for 20 days after a fairly brutal fight. Being that my suspension was so long I was required to attend the Option Center in Lawrenceville for my core classes.…

After I had turned 21 years old, I started working in local casinos as a janitor. I didn’t have a high school diploma, so finding work was difficult. I bounced from job to job, making minimum wage. I had to live with my parents, because I couldn’t afford to live on my own. After a year of doing this, I was out of work for over a year, before I was hired at another casino. I wasn’t there very long, and I was let go once again. My parents were irritated because I was now 23 years old, still living with them, and unemployed. To further my stress, my relationship with my long-term boyfriend was becoming unstable. Eventually we did break up, and it made me realize that I needed to change, or I would end up being on the streets. I had to become more stable, more mature,…

This journal article studies about the “Asian and Euro-American parents’ ethnotheories of play and learning: Effects on preschool children’s home routines and school behaviour.” It was written by Parminder Parmar, Sara Harkness, and Charles M. Super; Pamar is from the Pennsylvania State University, and the other two researchers came from the University of Conneticut, both universities can be found in the USA. The article is studying and discussing about the different views of euro- America parents from Asian parents on their view on play. Because it was said that Euro-Americans believe that play is one of the major contributors to the cognitive development of the child. But as for Asian parents they usually put academics first before play, and give little importance to it. With Asian parents play is more of a way for the child to gain social and physical skills.…
