Appendix B
Fundamentals of Biology Worksheet
You are beginning a journey in the world of biology. Completing this worksheet will prepare you with the background knowledge necessary for understanding this world!
What Are the Major Theories of Biology?
The major theories of biology have been tested over years and provide information helping you to understand the science of biology. For each theory, list the name of the person or persons known for scientifically testing each theory, the approximate date they experimented with the theory, and a sentence or two to describe the theory.
Bioenergetics:
Theory by Antoine-Laurent Lavoiser in the late 18th century, the unique network of chemical reactions in cells was an important experiment from this principle.
Biological classification:
Theory by Carolus Linneau in the late 18th century, Linneaus classified living organisms according to their similarities and differences. We now use Darwins theory of evolution.
Cells:
Theory by Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann in the 17th century, found that the cell is the smallest unit capable of exhibiting all of the characteristics of life. All organisms are made up of cells that come from preexisting cells.
Ecosystems:
This theory has no ready identifiable parent from the 20th century and states if change happens in any part of the biological community it causes change in other parts. Organisms interact with one another and with their environments.
Evolution by natural selection:
Theory by Charles Darwin in 1859, he published a book titled The Origin of Species. He was the first person to propose a scientific explanation about the diversity of life which is broke into two parts; species and natural selection.
Homeostasis:
Theory by Claude Bernard in the mid-19th century, a study was done that showed that a person functions best when their internal conditions are maintained. For
