King was a very important character in the novel and was completely taken out of the movie. King was a symbol of loyalty, love, sacrifice, and friendship. King made the ultimate sacrifice by giving his life to David. Although Johannes also did this in the movie, King’s sacrifice was more powerful because he was an animal; it was a miracle what he did for David, an act of God. Unlike Johannes, King actually left his home and everything he had known to be with David. King kept David company during the long, hard days, and he was David’s first real friend. Both the novel and the movie have Johannes, but only the novel has the hero, King.
Both the movie and the novel have a character named Carlos. Carlos is a young boy that physically hurts David. During the story, Carlos tries to apologize to David and asks for his forgiveness; David is so horrified and hurt by his actions that he feels that he can never forgive him. In the movie, David never ends up forgiving Carlos, however, in the novel he does. This is one of the most important parts of the story. David has an epiphany when he realizes that it was he who was cruel and cold to Carlos. The movie leaves out this entire part. The story is about change and finding ones self and the movie left out the biggest change David experiences. When David forgives Carlos he realizes that everyone makes mistakes, no one is perfect, and you can’t judge someone before you get to know them. David learns so many life lessons threw Carlos. Forgiveness is one of the major themes in the novel and David demonstrated so much maturity and
