I Am Sam Psychology Movie Review
1. Movie Title I Am Sam

2. Year of Production 2001 (Theatrical) – 2002 (Home Video)

3. Feature Length 134 Minutes

4. Director Jessie Nelson

5. Producers and Studio Director/Producer Jessie Nelson, Executive Producer David Scott Rubin & Producers Edward Zwick, Marshall Herskovitz, Richard Solomon. New Line Home Entertainment

6. Major Character Cast Sam Dawson played by Sean Penn Rita Harrison played by Michelle Pfeiffer Lucy Diamond Dawson played by Dakota Fanning

7. Brief Synopsis Mentally disabled Sam Dawson is a single father fighting to keep custody of his daughter Lucy with the help of his pro-bono lawyer, Rita Harrison.

11. Comparative Information The movie portrays Sam Dawson as a mentally deficient parent. The closest the movie, and any resource on it, came to giving an actual diagnosis of his condition is given by a judge in the film stating "… you have the mental capacity of a 7 year old." This movie revolves around Sam fighting for the right to raise his daughter beyond the age of 7. The film also has many sociological aspects that correspond to Sam and his daughter, Lucy's relationship as well as the effects on them separately. In the large amount of legal proceedings Sam goes through in the movie, I expected to hear a formal diagnosis or at least a technical term for Sam's mental capabilities, but there was none. Some of the symptoms portrayed by Sam lead me to believe he is developmentally disabled (DD) with moderate learning disabilities. Compulsion without obsession is more common in the mentally disabled, which lead me to believe that he also has a slight compulsive disorder which comes into play at only highly stressful situations. The legalities that play out through the movie show the social service system as best-interest but cold and inflexible with no other options. The movie did not address that there are government programs that help specifically with DD parents and even the same parents that

It is also responsible for recognizing the needs and wants of others, and no longer prioritizes the desires of itself. Sam depicts a character that obeys their ego. She consistently rationalizes her actions, and tries to meet the desires of her id in a manner that is socially acceptable. This is evident when she helps Charlie through his negative experience with psychedelics. Charlie recalls the experience by saying, “Sam went on to explain what she called "the trance." The trance happens when you don't focus on anything, and the whole big picture swallows and moves around you” (139). Father’s all across the US are denied rights to their children, simply because they are not the mother. “90% of divorce cases involving children, women are granted sole custody, or residential parent status, to use the new politically correct term.” (deLevie, 1994) Court systems make it extremely hard for a father to receive any type of custody, all because the courts see the mother as the nurturer. In some cases, mothers develop Malicious Mother Syndrome while going through a divorce which, causes even more issues for a father trying to get custody. Malicious mother syndrome is an act of a mother manipulating a child and the court system to hate the father. Instead of taking the mother’s actions into consideration, the system just grants the mother sole custody, trusting that what the mother is saying about the father is true. The court systems should be paying a closer attention to what is in the child’s best interest, why the child needs adequate amounts of time with the father, and the acts of the mother.…

The film “As Good as It Gets,” starring Jack Nicholson as Melvin Udall and Helen Hunt as Carol Connelly, is about a seemingly bitter old man, Mr. Udall, who gradually works to overcome his many deeply-rooted social issues in order to eventually develop a relationship with his favorite waitress, Carol, as well as get along with his neighbor, Simon, and Simon’s dog, Verdell. The movie is not only entertaining, but also clearly encompasses many psychological principles, including self-fulfilling prophecy, the feel-good, do-good phenomenon, mere exposure effect, equity, and full disclosure. However, the three most prominent psychological principles constantly present throughout the movie are obsessive-compulsive disorder, the fundamental attribution…
