I Remember “Mom did you just see that, a plane just fell from the sky.” While I sat on the floor I couldn’t believe what I had just said. A plane fell from the sky. I had just turned six a few hours ago. Any child who was basically five years old would never be able to grasp the concept of why a plane would crash into a building. Not only would they not be able to understand one plane falling, but three in just one day. I could only look to my parents for answers.
I remember my birthday like it was yesterday. All I had talked about getting up to that day was a new Barbie to add to my mini collection of Barbie dolls. That day I got what I wanted and more, 20 Barbie’s in one pack, this I remember because the next morning I was rushing to open them at like six in the morning before I got myself dressed for school. My mom had told me not to open them, but the excitement of having all those new Barbie’s all to myself was overwhelming. I had to at least open them and leave them in order on my bed so I’d be able to play with them when I got back home from school, so I started opening the giant box. Just as I was peeling back the plastic my mom walked in expecting me to have my clothes on like I usually did so she could do my long brown hair. There I was, sitting on the floor in my pink pajamas surrounded by wrapping paper and my presents. The expression on my mom’s face is something that I’ll never forget. It was a look of “I’m going to kill you!” mixed with “What are you doing?” and “Why aren’t you ready?” I knew I was in for it,
“Ange...why aren’t you ready? Did I not specifically tell you yesterday that I didn’t want you to open your gifts until you got home from school today? Why couldn’t you just listen to me for once? You’re going to be late for school and you know what? If you miss your bus you’ll be in double the trouble for not

9/11, a day of death, destruction, and devastation. It's early morning, about 8:45 a.m., and American Airlines Flight 11 crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center. It has to be an accident. Why would an airplane purposefully run into the tower? It was Tuesday, March first, 2011, my mother woke me up so I can start getting ready for school. I rose with eager anticipation, just four more days until my thirteenth birthday and I just couldn’t wait. I brushed my teeth and hurried down to eat the complimentary breakfast offered to us by the hotel we were staying at. You see we had been staying at a hotel for the past five months because the home we had been renting was foreclosed on so the utility companies turned off the power and the electricity. We had to get down at just the right time so that there was a small crowd but a lot of food so that we can take food back to the room to save for dinner. After breakfast, we…

    I Remember Mama

exquisitely detailed film directed by George Stevens I Remember Mama tells of a Norwegian family living in San Francisco during the beginning of this century. It is an old classical movie, based on Kathryn Forbes' novel titled Mama's Bank Account. The film is rendered and it is a moving act of memory about how an immigrant family copes with poverty and how they try to overcome the odds of living in a foreign country. I could identify with almost every scene in the movie and not because of the era but because of the feelings it provoked. There was so much warmth, so much hope and yet it wasn't the "perfect" family, it was just people living life on life's terms.…

I remember my kindergarten class with all the play and sleep time. My teacher asked that we needed to bring in a toy for play time. I told my mother that I needed a new toy because I didn’t want to bring an old toy to school. My mother took me to the toy store where she bought me a Michael Jackson dancing action figure. He had the sparkling glove and a mic. I was happy to get a toy to match my Thriller vinyl record and I moonwalked all night. I was also happy to show off my toy to all my class mates the next day. The worst experience was when my…

When I turned fourteen, I had a long talk with my parents about my big day only being a year away and how we needed to start with all of the preparations. The first thing I look for was my dress. In my vision, it was the most beautiful, shiny, and spongy dress. I wanted to be a princess for a day. One day after school my older sister, Carolina, had a magazine with prom dresses in it. Since she was a senior, she was on the looking for a dress too. As we saw the magazine, we found a lot of pretty dresses and told my mom to take us shopping, so that Carolina could try some on. As we arrived to the store "Glitz and Glamour", we found out they sold quinceañera dresses as well. My mom asked the employee to bring us some quinceañera dress magazines, while Caro and I watched the magazines for prom dresses. Suddenly, I stumbled upon a beautiful, green, shiny dress. It was perfect. As soon as I saw it, I said, "Mom, I want this dress for my quinceañera." We told the lady that I wanted the dress and she explained that it was available in pink and green. Since I had fallen in love with the color, I told my mom I wanted it in green, but since the tradition is pink, it was obvious that my mom was going to say no. I disagreed with my mom and ordered it green. The lady told us that my dress would arrive in four days. I was…

On the morning of September 11, 2001 millions of people were in shock the moment they received news that the World Trade Center was hit. The images from this horrific day flooded the media’s television screens and newspaper articles. Perhaps the most gruesome images shown were those of people jumping out of the building as they were collapsing. Tom Junod, a writer for the Esquire magazine, illustrates his perspective of this shocking incident through pictures, media coverage, and depicting people’s reactions in his article The Falling Man. Tom Junod’s article should be read by anyone who believes they have felt all there is to feel from the 9/11 attack. He will prove otherwise that there is indeed still much emotion to be felt even 10 years after the happenings of that day. Tom Junod brings back the almost forgotten, painful recollections, of the morning of September 11.…

That was the day that my grandpa passed away. Every single part of that date is engrained in my memory. My parents had driven up to Wisconsin, and my older sister Lauren drove home for college to stay with me. It wasn’t out of the normal for my parents to quickly leave, so I didn’t think much of it. I remember going to hang out with Tatum, my best friend of the time. It was a nice day outside, so of course we were outside playing on the trampoline and doing all our weird routines like we always did. Her family, who was like a second family to me, decided to go out to eat so they brought me along. We went to La Charitas. I remember how Mrs. Teeple pulled out a funny card game for us to play, and I remember Tatum cutting out faces in her tortilla, making us all laugh. When we got back to the house we saw that my sister called, so I said bye to the Teeples and walked one minute down the road to my house. Lauren, who is one of the most emotional in the family, was left with the task of telling me that my grandpa had passed away. I had just grabbed a snack of chocolate cheerios as she started to tell me the news. I didn’t know how to react, so I ran into the basement directly to the furthest corner I could find. Lauren tried talking to me, but I wanted to be by myself. One of the hardest things I have ever done was talking to my dad on the phone after finding out. He called to tell me the plans, that he was coming home to get us, and…

It all began with shopping. First with my girlfriends over the years, goofing off on trips to the mall trying on gorgeous flowing gowns for fun, and then it was finally time for me to buy one, finally a formal occasion where I got to dress up in a fancy gown with high heels, my Mom took me to the mall. Even though it wasn’t quite prom, it was still a formal dance, a celebration of completing middle school and entering into high school. While I shopped with my Mom I could sense her excitement for me. It was exciting and special for her to see her little girl growing up. We shopped and shopped, I must’ve tried on a hundred dresses until I found the perfect one. It was pink with tiny embroidered flowers all over. I completed my look with strappy silver heels, silver jewelry and a hand bag.…

The drawn out elevator ride was almost over. Only eighteen more floors to go and it would be time for him to sit down and rest his body. Suddenly, as the elevator hit the 50th floor, there was a large “boom” and the elevator began to bang violently from side to side. One of the men reached over and pressed the emergency button. As they all sat frustrated and worried waiting for a response, they became incredibly antsy. After what seemed like an agonizing amount of time, the operator informed them frantically that the building was under attack, and the loud “boom” they heard was a plane crashing into the building. The mood of the elevator drastically transformed from frustration to pure fear.…
