Analysis and Discussion
This investigation utilised interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) in order to explore and understand the individual explanations of those awaiting gastric bypass surgery. With the participant explanations, researchers were able to distinguish two superordinate themes and subordinate themes. These are presented in the following table.
Superordinate Theme
Subordinate Theme
Motivation
Poor Health
Embarrassment
Unhappiness
Family
New Life (goals)
New capabilities
Change in emotional state
Improved Health Researchers reviewed and analysed video diaries of overweight individuals who were awaiting gastric bypass surgery in the near future. The future gastric bypass patients uploaded their video blogs (vlogs) onto YouTube explaining what experiences they have had in the past and how it has contributed to their choice to undergo the weight loss surgery and what they hope for after the surgery. This has been demonstrated as two sup ordinate themes, “experiences leading to surgery” the motivations gastric bypass surgery and “new life” the goals that they hope to be able to achieve because of the procedure.
Superordinate Theme 1: Motivation
One of the subordinate themes found in this investigation was “poor health” and it’s role in each vlogger’s accounts of their experiences. This theme was common to all participants in the study as they each shared the same idea that their depreciating health was one of the main and catalytic reasons for them having the surgery to lose weight.
Subordinate Theme: Poor Health
