Chino Hills saw its first use back in 1771 as land used for grazing cattle that belonged to the San Gabriel Mission until being sold to Richard Gird in 1848 after Mexico ceded it to the United States. The city began to see a population growth in the early 1920’s when both a mineral springs and a country club were both built in the city. The mineral springs were built in an area of the city known as sleep hollow otherwise known as carbon canyon. The springs became a getaway from the big city and soon saw small dwellings being built around it. In the 1960’s the springs became a constant hang out for hippies and many permanent houses were built during that time to accommodate those that would hang out there. Unfortunately today they springs are no longer open but many of the houses still remain. The Los Serranos country club was opened in 1925 which allowed members to buy small lots of land around the club on which many members would build cabanas or casitas for weekend getaways which led to future more permanent housing.…

This town devotes so much time into the team and places so many expectations season after season. If the Permian Panthers do not win a State Championship, then it is considered a disappointing season. The book covers players lives on the field as well as off, the history of Odessa, and how a town comes together because of football. H.G Bissinger follows Permian in the 1988 season on their run to a State Championship in Texas.…

The Boondock Saints movie exhibits and demonstrates many possible causes and reasons for social deviance. One example of this is shown in the Subjective view of deviance through a Constructionist Theory. The Subjectivist believes that a deviant person is a conscious, feeling, thinking subject and that one should understand the experience of that person. From a Constructionist perspective, deviants are actively seeking meanings in the deviant activities. The brothers in the movie are seeking meaning from their killing. They believe that they are on a mission from God, and that they will be protected and blessed for doing this.…
The short story of “This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona” by Sherman Alexie shows the value of a true friendship. A true friend is the one who doesn’t have to physically be by your side the whole time. He can stand aside, awaits for your trouble, and lends you a hand. A true friend doesn’t care how the world sees him, he cares only how his “best” friend view of him. The true friend in this story is Thomas Builds-the-Fire. The story goes back and forth with the present and the past to show Victor and Thomas who were once best friends and now, almost stranger.…
“Everything’s bigger in Texas,” a widely known saying, may very well be true when it comes to the size of the state, but is everything in Texas really bigger? Researching the Lone Star state, the second largest state in the nation, Dallas seemed to be the largest city as well as the center of it all; and it also could be used as a good representation of the state’s overall average climate. The Dallas “metroplex is located in North Central Texas, approximately 250 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico” (Dallas/Fort Worth Climatology). To appreciate the large and intricate city, it is valuable to know the climate, vegetation, soils, landforms, and the environmental issues that are present in Dallas, and see how they affect one another. The temperature during the summer months may be “bigger” or higher than your typical state, but exploring deeper into Dallas’s physical geography, will help conjure present what makes up it’s physical attributes, and most importantly, why.…
The tolerance of drugs, prostitution, gambling, 24-hour liquor sales, gang violence, and the emphasis on the nightlife give Las Vegas its nickname, Sin City. Also known as The Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas is a world-wide attraction for people from all walks of life. Whether visitors are seeking relaxation in one of Las Vegas’s five-star hotel casinos along with entertainment, gambling, shopping, and fine dining; employment or a new home in the nation’s fastest growing community, or the permissible use of money for sex-related services; Las Vegas thrives off of their tourism industry. Sometimes referred to as Hawaii’s ninth island, Las Vegas is a popular vacation spot for residents of Hawaii. Should the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico become one of the United States Puerto Rico is an island in the West Indies acquired by the United States after the Spanish-America War in 1898. Puerto Rico is considered a commonwealth, a nation or state governed by the people, a republic. The capital of Puerto Rico is San Juan. Puerto Rico currently chooses its local officials and decides its own budget and taxes. On four occasions the option to continue a commonwealth, choose statehood, or independence has been put to a vote, and all times the voters upheld commonwealth. Puerto Rico is culturally distinct enough from the United States to justify separate treatment, and want to continue their long standing political and economic ties with the U.S. The greatest concern to Puerto Ricans is maintaining their language and culture. Puerto Rico is currently bilingual, but between 1990 and 1993 Spanish was the official language. The attitude toward English on the island can be described as hostile. There are many pros and cons to statehood. The first is Puerto Ricans will receive taxes from their citizens to build. They will have an open market to trade with all nations that currently trade with the United States. Puerto Rico would also benefit from America’s high per capita income and low unemployment rates. Also by becoming at state Puerto would have a voice in Congress with representatives and senators. There are also many cons that can be argued in statehood. The cost of living will rise enormously, they will lose their recognition as an individual nation in the Olympics, and they would lose their representative in the Miss Universe Pageant, and English would become the official language. In an article written by Robert DePosada explains the biggest concern of many Puerto Ricans and the culture conflict if it became a state: Establishing English as the official language of this Spanish-speaking nation would generate cultural divisions similar to those challenging the…
In population Nevada is one of the smallest states of the fifty states in the Union, but it invites and receives more intense national publicity than many others. “It is a testing ground for unorthodox social theories and an outpost of solid American conservatism” (313). Because the state is so large and its centers of population is so widely scattered, no single generalization about it will suffice for a historical summary. Nevada, with its 110,000 square miles, would cover more than half of Spain. Nevada is not the largest state in the Union, but it is big enough to inspire awe in its visitors” (2).…

We all have known Las Vegas as a bustling city of gambling, late night fun and the endearing concept of living one's life to the fullest. Situated on a bend of the Mississippi river New Orleans has been the chief city of Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico’s busiest northern port since the early 1700 's. Originally founded by the French five feet below sea level and named La Nouvelle Orleans after Phillippe Duc D 'Orleans the city at the time was confined to what is now called the French Quarter. The French Quarter is laid out in a grid system. This grid system was put in place after a hurricane hit in 1722 and destroyed most of its structures. New Orleans was later ruled under the Spanish for nearly fourty years and then bought by the United States in the 1803 Louisiana Purchase.…

Why is crime and violence high in America? Crime and violence is high in America because there are people in America as it is all over the world that cannot follow rules. There are thieves, rapist, and murders in every place in America. My expectations were not met. The crime rate is not high in every place in America. I found out that crime is high in communities with high poverty rate more so than any other community. This information causes my perspective to change greatly. I look at crime in a different way after doing this research paper. Crime is committed by people that have mental problems or they are on drugs. Also, some movies watched by individuals can play a role in some crimes being committed. Some individuals think it is ok to perform these acts of crime. This information is an eye opener to me. I would have never known this information if it was not for doing this research paper. I have come to the conclusion that I will never find the answers that I am looking for. There is no way that anyone in the wild could have an answer to why crime and violence is high in America. My opinion on why crime and violence is high is because people don’t seem to have a heart or respect others. This opinion has changed because the person committing crimes may get pleasure from it who knows. In my research the book Reducing Gun Violence (2012), I got a clear understanding of violent crime that relates to guns. This book talked about how gun crimes can be cut down, and what people in authority can do to make these changes. I feel that my research is inspiring because it demonstrates how crime and violent have impacted many communities here in America. I put a lot of time and energy in finding information on my why question and formatting my paper correctly. In my research I have come to a new point. Is there a thing as good…
