This booklet contains information which has to be completed in order to work towards the full credit value.

Assignment /Task 1
Know the Health and safety Policies and procedures of the work setting.
You need to research the main legislation, guideline, policies and procedures for ensuring the Health and Safety of the Individual within the setting.
Using internet
Reading policies from various sources etc.
Identify who is responsible for maintaining a safe environment and how it is assessed on a daily basis.
Obtain a copy of a risk assessment or create your own.
Using the paperwork provided by your assessor complete the following information.
1.1 Outline the Health and Safety policies and procedures of the work setting.
1.2 identify the lines of responsibility and reporting for Health and Safety in the work setting
1.3 explain what a risk assessment is and how it is managed in the work setting
Assignment / Task 2
Be able to recognise risks and hazards in the work setting and during off site visits.
You need to:
Obtain a copy of, or create your own risk assessment for all areas that children have access to both, inside and outside the setting and then carry it out.
Complete or devise your own risk assessment for a trip to the local park and know what other safety measures must be in place.
You then need to write knowledge statement covering all of the set criteria below highlighting where each of the key points can be found. This should then meet all the assessment criteria.
Include any relevant work products.
1.1 Explain why a safe but challenging environment is important for children and young people
1.2 Identify the differences between risk and hazard
1.3 Identify potential hazards to the health, safety and security of children or young people in the work setting
1.4 Contribute to the health and safety risk assessment in areas of the work setting and off site visits

Know what to do in the event of a non medical incident or emergency.
You will need to understand the difference between an incident and an emergency, and then using
The settings procedures and guidelines, research the following:
How to deal with a fire emergency
How to deal with security incidents
How to deal with emergency incidents
Complete the above using the relevant paperwork provided.

1.2 Outline the actions to take in response to the following situations:
a. Fires
b. Security incidents including missing child
c. Emergency incidents
Assignment / Task 4
Know what to do in the event of a child or young person becoming ill or injured.
You need to research
Signs and symptoms of child illness’s such as fever, rashes, diarrhoea, sickness
Recognising signs of injury, such as fractures and unconsciousness.
For this assignment you could also RPL a current, up to date First Aid certificate or Paediatric First Aid Certificate and place a copy of certificate within portfolio.
You then need to write an assignment covering all of the set criteria below highlighting where each of the key evidence points can be found. This should then meet all of the assessment criteria
1.1 Identify the signs and symptoms which may indicate that a child or young person is injured or unwell
1.2 Identify circumstances when children or young people may need urgent medical attention
1.3 Outline own role and responsibilities in the event of a child or young person requiring urgent medical attention.
Assignment / Task 5
Be able to follow work setting procedures for reporting and recording accidents, incidents, emergencies and illness.
You need to research and obtain copies of your settings paperwork for recording:
Accidents
Incidents
Emergencies
Illness
You then need to know how to fill them in ensuring that you obtain all the relevant signatures and dates.
For this assignment you could reflect back on when you have dealt with an accident/incident and write a reflective account on this, including a copy of the paperwork you completed (leaving out names for confidentiality/data protection)

Be able to follow infection control procedures
You need to :
Research your settings procedures for Infection control, and complete the relevant paperwork given for this
Understand the importance of wearing the correct PPE and demonstrate your competency on this
Demonstrate your ability to adhere to your settings policy and procedures on health and hygiene
Some of this assignment/task will be directly observed by your Assessor within the work setting.
1.1 Outline procedures for infection control in own work setting using paperwork provided
1.2 Describe personal protective clothing that is used to prevent spread of infection (To be directly observed by the assessor in the work place)
1.3 Demonstrate how to wash and dry hands to avoid the spread of infection
(To be directly observed by the assessor within the work place)
1.4 Demonstrate safe disposal of waste to avoid the spread of infection
(To be directly observed by the assessor within the work place)
Assignment /Task 7
Know the work settings’ procedures for receiving, storing and administering medicines.
To will need to research:
Your settings policies and procedures on storing and administering medication and complete the given paperwork for this
Understanding the importance of, and implications of not adhering to these set policies.
Think of the consequences of not giving the right medication or not giving the correct amount.
You then need to write a knowledge statement covering all of the set criteria below highlighting where each of the key evidence points can be found. This should then meet all the assessment criteria.
1.1 identify the procedures of the work setting governing the receipt, storage and administration of medicines
1.2 explain how the procedures of the work setting protect both children and young people and practitioners
