Given that China and Athens were located in two separate places, they both had very different forms of government, geography, and daily life.…
often discriminated against due to their race and/ or nationality. This problem occurs many times throughout Dragonwings, a book by Laurence Yep. In his book, the Chinese characters who immigrate to America face many challenges in their new lives. They are thought of as inferior, have to endure many hardships, and become lonely due to the fact that they must leave the majority of their families in China. 1. Compare the main features of the social structure of the Classical Civilizations in the Mediterranean, China, & India: The social structures in all three of these classical civilizations differ in various ways. In classical India, the social hierarchy was founded upon the very strict caste system. The caste system assigned occupations and regulated marriages. The hierarchy of this civilization was also based off of having husbands being the dominant ones in the family. One Indian code even recommended for wives to worship their husbands. The bottom of the caste system however, was extremely harsh. Low caste system individuals had few legal rights. There was also less personal contact between high and low groups due to their separation.…
Over the years, it seems as if the agricultural industry has been more focused on the quantity, more than quality. As a society, we have been manipulated by companies into thinking we are eating all natural ingredients. Before companies started serving our foods with chemicals, authentic food came from animals that were free to roam on pastures and that were freshly cut and packaged. Now the food comes from a factory farm, which is when animals are treated as if they were machines designed only to produce. Factory farming has a negative impact on animals, human health and the environment. As consumers, we should be in control of what we want in our food; and to do so, we should cut down on how much we buy from the markets.…
No one likes to suffer. None of us like to feel pain, but factory farmed animals such as cows, pigs, and chickens experience great pain in their short-lived lives. The website factoryfarming.com, states, “a standard beef slaughter house kills 250 cattle every hour.” The method used is “stunning” this is done by using a catapult gun and giving the cows a mechanical blow to the head. It is to render them unconscious, but this procedure is terribly imprecise: “as a result, conscious animals are often hung upside down, kicking and struggling, while a slaughterhouse worker makes another attempt to render them unconscious. Eventually the animals will be ‘stuck’ in the throat with a knife, and blood will gush from their bodies whether or not they are conscious” (factoryfarming.com). An animal has an intrinsic value, and to dismiss that, is morally wrong. How do we kill others that value their life? People may say it’s the cow’s…
Americans usually discredit the Chinese in the founding of America. However the Chinese put a large amount of work into helping construct the western part of the United States. In addition, they personally may have suffered more than Americans in the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. In fact, some could argue that the Chinese laborers had the most difficulty surviving and thriving in the west due to natural dangers, economic deprivation, and social threats.…
Land preparation for farming and animal rearing was done using a method called girdling tree killing. They will cut around each tree to stop nutrient from getting to the tree and the leaves will later felled down. They will now come back and cut the branches of the trees and burn the underbrush. Farmer starts plowing as the trees stumps decays and stones will be removed from the fields. Fields for farming are always small because of labor and there are boundaries between fields and the neighbors. The house or the farm was viewed as the workplace. And land given out to each family will be fenced to stop cattle from wandering off going into the farm areas. The land allocated to each family will show the family social status within the community. The towns developed individually and community involvement was given a great significant although the community was close knit.…
American Born Chinese was a book that I would have initially missed reading because it didn’t appeal to me then. However, it wasn’t until the three narratives intertwined at the end that I realized that this was a great read. Jin, Danny, and the Monkey King all have one thing in common; they try to become something they are not, and they lose their sense of identity until the realization of the truth that we cannot fight who we really are. Jin comes to America and desperately tries to fit in with his classmates and assimilate. The Monkey King tried to become something greater than himself, and become an equal with the other deities. Danny is what looks to be a normal high school student, but is plagued by his Chinese cousin’s visits every year to his school. Each story has different content but primarily focuses on the theme of identity, and how each of them find their own identity.…

The Han Dynasty is one of, if not the most successful, dynasties in all of China’s history. The Hans ruled for just over four centuries, one of the longest of the Chinese dynasties. The Hans were preceded by China’s first dynasty, the Qin. The Hans came to power after Emperor Gaozu, Liu Bang, a peasant, defeated the last rebellion against him. As far as power and prestige goes, the Han Dynasty rivaled the Roman Empire. The Han Dynasty ruled in what is thought to be the golden age, which many dynasties can be traced back to. It was also considered to be an inspiring united empire and an unfathomable government.…

While driving past factory farms, anyone would assume that animals live a satisfying life style. At first sight, the animals look very robust and one would think that they have a healthy diet. Appearances can always be deceiving. What one observes while driving past these farms is not what factory farms actually are. Behind closed doors, many things go on that society would never expect. Every year, animals on factory farms encounter unimaginable suffering and go through horrid living conditions.…
