A TV advertisement for Hasbro’s Rose Petal Cottage shows completely the gender bias on women, giving a pattern for young girls to follow. First of all, we can see that the girl from the ad is wearing baby pink, which implies that little girls should always wear pink and light colors, different from boys, who can’t even think of pink. When we move around the 12 first seconds of the video, we can also see that the girl is cooking (probably cupcakes). Again, that implies that girls need to grow with the idea that “women were born to work for men” or so forth. The little girl from the ad is smiling as she gets the cupcakes from the stove, and it reinforces the idea: “you should cook for men and smile.” A third factor that reinforces the sexism and gender bias idea presented is the fact that the little girl (around 16 seconds) is washing clothes. This, as well as the scene where she’s cooking, shows that tasks from home is women’s duty – that women need to work no matter what and they need to accept it because it is reality. By the end of the ad, the background soundtrack says: “taking care of my home is dream, dream, dream…” It seems that the creators of this ad wants to say that women will work in the house, cleaning, cooking, washing, taking care of babies, etc. They are already trying to insert this idea in girls’ head by even creating this whole “cottage” with these home-task objects. Then, they show the girls smiling and all happy, saying that the cottage is actually a place of their own. They try to use language and convincing images of happy girls that the cottage will bring privacy, equality, and above all, happiness. In conclusion, it is possible to say that media is, since early ages, reinforcing the wrong idea of women’s role in society, meaning that women’s place is inside and they can’t work outside, with “men’s
