Parkinson's disease (PD)
Thesis Statement: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a degenerative neurologic disorder/central nervous system disorder that generally develops in older people, there is no known cure for PD but it is possible to live a long a fulfilling life.
Explanation of Disease 1. Causes and Risks a. Caused by loss of dopamine. b. Risks for Parkinson's disease are age, heredity, sex, and exposure to toxins. 2. Diagnosis Information c. A neurologic examination must be done. d. A diagnostic test can be done but rarely does it ever uncover any abnormality. 3. Treatment Options e. There is no cure for PD but it can be managed. f. The disease can be managed by physical therapy, speech therapy, regularly seeing a neurologist, and coped with by seeing counselors. 4. Prevention Options g. A way has not yet been discovered for the prevention of PD. h. A theory said to prevent PD is by consuming antioxidants to keep free radical damage to a minimum.
A. Risk Factors 1. Controllable Risk Factors a. Exposure to toxins such as pesticide or herbicide. b. Avoiding trauma to the head, neck, or upper cervical spine. 2. Uncontrollable Risk Factors c. Advancing in age and your sex are uncontrollable risk factors to PD. d. Genetic factors are also another uncontrollable risk factor of PD. B. Role of Immune System 1. Recovery a. Recovery from PD is not easy and is not always guaranteed. b. Exercise, eating well, and proper hydration all aid the body to help fight PD. 2. Prevention c. HLA genes in the immune system are key to this disease they help the immune system tell the difference between the body’s own tissue and foreign invaders. d.
