Primary, secondary and tertiary levels of Health Promotion
In excess of ten years, health promotion and prevention has been the main focus of healthcare professionals in general, but nurses in particular. Health promotion is “the art and science of helping people discover the synergies between their core passions and optimal health, enhancing their motivation to strive for optimal health and supporting them in changing their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health (Edelman & Mandle, 2010, p. 14). Basically it is saying that it is the approach used to augment a sense of health in addition to reducing occurrences of sickness that can happen to any person at any given time. In achieving this, it assists in the decrease of the financial burden that the patients and the government have to absorb, or pay, for the cure. Being with the susceptible community, nurses work in the role of much needed advocates, researchers, educators and healers for the duration of all three levels of promotion and prevention (Edelman & Mandle, 2010).
Primary prevention is the earliest level to advocate for acceptable wellness and to protect people against ailments and/or sicknesses. There are numerous approaches in which the nurses can assist with general health and fighting particular afflictions. The biggest methods are, one, vaccination education and the benefits thereof; two, administering vaccines; and three, educating about the benefits of a healthy diet and regular physical activity; four, addressing the importance of STD prevention and protection, etc., (Edelman & Mandle, 2010). This method occurs at learning institutions, offices, clinics and hospitals. All in all, nurses assist people increase direction to halt sicknesses for a more desirable life.
