Radio
TITLE OF FILM: Radio
Briefly summarize the film.
This movie is about a young man from the Anderson, SC area. The man has some difficulties in his life since he was born mentally challenged. Throughout the movie Radio (James Kennedy was his real name) befriends head football coach, Coach Jones. The first time they met in the movie was when Radio brought back a football that had been kicked over the fence a day or two earlier and Coach Jones told him he would buy him a hamburger. Then Radio started hanging around more. This is also where controversy started when the players would pick on him and play mean jokes. After football Radio went on to basketball to help out and it was more of the same from particularly one person that played both basketball and football. Radio was also granted the ability to come to school as an 11th grader and later on he was able to go as long as he wanted to. The film also shows how tough it is to be mentally challenged and to lose a parent. Coach Jones caught a lot of criticism throughout the movie taking up for Radio but he stuck through and said that as he is here more and more we can learn more and more from him just as much as he can learn from us. Eventually Coach Jones steps down from being the head coach at TL Hanna High but still kept his relationship with Radio. Towards the end of the movie is really where almost all the community gets behind Radio and supports him being there and really being a blessing to the community.
Explain whether individuals with exceptionalities were portrayed realistically, stereotypically, or as superhuman.
This film is a little biased towards both stereotypically and realistically at times. I would definitely say it showed both of those types and maybe even all three, with him being almost superhuman at times.
Discuss whether the following values were achieved in the lives of individuals with cultural differences or exceptionalities:
Great expectations – Coach Jones definitely had great

The movie Radio is based on the true life story of James Robert "Radio" Kennedy, an African-American male with a slight mental disability, played by Cuba Gooding Jr.. The setting of this movie is in the small rural town of Anderson, South Carolina in 1976.The movie begins with the main character, Radio, pushing a grocery cart filled with his personal belongings and a radio, which he was affectionately named after, along a train track. During Radio 's frequent journeys through the small town, he frequently passes the practice fields of the local high school football team, the T.I. Hanna Yellow Jackets. During these journeys, Radio 's presence catches the eye of the head football coach Harold Jones, played by Ed Harris. At first the community is taken back by this unusual relationship between Radio and Coach Jones, but soon people start to realize the sincerity of Radio 's presence and Coach Jones helping hand. The main opposing character of Radio 's presence in the school setting was Frank, played by Chris Mulkey, the father of Hanna 's football and basketball star Johnny. Frank believed that Radio 's presence in the school caused a distraction to the students, and his own son 's success in athletics. The sentiment of Frank wasn 't felt by the rest of the community and the subsequent controversy caused Coach Jones to step down as head football coach. The controversy of Radio 's presence soon ended, and Radio was embraced by the community and made an honorary coach and student…

The movie starts with the heartbreaking scene of Radio pushing his cart around the town, in his own little world; people are ignoring him, and a lady pulls her daughter out of the way, running towards the opposite sidewalk. Every day Radio walks by the school, watching the football team training. While lingering by the fence of the high school football field one afternoon, the boy catches the eye of the team's coach, Harold Jones, a well respected coach and teacher, who spends his long days preparing his team for each big game. When the teams’ ball went over the fence, Radio decides to keep it, adding it to his collection of junk. The next day Jones finds his players mistreating the boy - they tied him up with medical tape and threw him in the equipment shed – so he goes out of his way to give them an appropriate punishment. Then, unsatisfied that he's done all he can, the coach invites the boy to help out with the team. Radio, who says little during his first meetings with the coach, is given the odd nickname by Jones and his assistant after they notice how fascinated he was about the radio in the office.…
