1. Background
Morgan Stanley (MS) a leading U.S. investment bank since its inception in 1935, was in the midst of an organizational renewal.
Our goal is to be the world’s best investment bank and the Firm of choice for clients, people, our shareholders.
People: Source of competitive advantage
Environment: foster teamwork, innovation, effectively co-ordinate work across the firm.
Capital Markets Services Division (CMS) serve as a link between the Investment Banking Division (IBD) and the sales and trading arms of the firm.
Professionals in CMS must be “entrepreneurs”—like sales people, but responsible and accountable for their own client base and self-starter.
Paul Nasr who had nearly 20 years of experience and was credited with building a formidable capital markets business was recruited by Mack
Leadership role in Capital Markets Services:
“Shake up the culture”
Build a much more profitable business for Morgan Stanley in the market of delivering capital markets services to financial services firms.
Rob Parson was recruited by Nasr to develop the market of financial services firms.
Join MS as a market coverage professional with title “Principal” in CMS
Have ten years of experience with strong relationships with the important players in the banking and insurance industries. had acquired a strong reputation and a proven track record in financial services
2. Situation
MS wanted to increase ranking and market share in capital market. They also want to build up franchise and culture.
Parson in his time had spent working on the financial services sector, made significant gains in building Morgan Stanley’s reputation and revenues:
Rank: 10th to 3rd
Market share: 2% to 12.2%
Parson was a talent of MS as “a strong revenue producer” with a lot of strengths in skill, market knowledge and characteristic. He is on track on becoming Managing director, but he had some problems in adjusting to the Morgan
