1. Topic: The need to elevate the Helicopter Search and Rescue training for the pilots and crew of A109E.
One of the primary units of the Philippine Navy for Search and Rescue missions is its naval air assets. With the advent of the Augusta 109E helicopters, the capability of Navy to respond to emergency situations has become more efficient and effective due to the aircraft’s speed, coverage advantage and its ability to deploy personnel and equipment in isolated places. However, during one of the assessments conducted by SAR experts, it was observed that the in-house training being offered to pilots and crew is inadequate compared to global qualification standards in conducting Helicopter SAR. This paper will examine the present training of HSAR operation, identify the gaps, and present a more comprehensive course that will give them the expertise in performing such missions. 2. Topic: The need to conform with the international standards for the personal protective equipment (PPE) of pilots and crew of A109E helicopters conducting Helicopter Search and Rescue Operations.
One of the front liners of the Navy in Search and Rescue missions is the Naval Air Group. The A109E naval helicopters take pride in its role as Search and Rescue capable platform. However, with its present SAR equipment inventory, the pilots and crew conducting such mission are placed in a hazardous situation and may not be able to perform competently due to lacking personal protective equipment (PPE). PPEs refer to protective clothing, helmets, garments or equipment designed to protect the wearer’s body from injury. This paper will determine the internationally recognized standards for PPE specialized for Search and Rescue and its advantages if used in the conduct of naval operations.
