Are stereotypes a useful source of information about other people?
The definition of the word ‘stereotype’ is verb) a conventional or formulaic conception or image (Noun) A conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image
By stereotyping people we pre judge them, often unfairly and form inaccurate opinions of them. For example if we see a lad with a cap and hoody, we immediately think he is up to no good and become weary of their presence around us. Another example is that in the 1980s all gay men were associated with AIDS and that was where the disease came from. Thankfully due to work of Princess Diana and mary fisher in America the stereotype was changed. We often stereotype someone because of lack of information and knowledge or given incorrect information, which was the case with AIDS.
Another example is that door to door salesman are unrealiable and trying to sell products what we don’t need or are not trustworthy.
