A famous English novelist by the name Aldous Huxley once stated that “Most human beings have an almost infinite capacity for taking things for granted”. Many of us do not really realize what we have until we lose it and start to regret.
What would life be like without electricity? Everyday, we use electricity to do many functions for us - from being the power source for our computers and televisions, to the operation of our alarm clocks and lighting. Despite its great importance in our daily life, yet like air and water, we take electricity for granted. There is an assumption that the lights will come on and machines will run when the switch is turned on. The people who build, maintain and repair power generating facilities, however, take nothing for granted as they work to keep electricity flowing to our homes, offices, schools and hospitals.
We woke up breathing on our bed, with our hand-phones beside us, and have the means to eat three meals a day. Our shower works with hot water, and there isn’t earthquake, tsunami, typhoon or other natural disasters going on. These are the few little things that we thought it should go right every day. Yet we do not appreciate the fact that we have a wonderful family, a warm home, the opportunity to rest somewhere relatively peaceful and the advanced technology which made our lives easier. In other parts of the world, there are wars, disasters, sick children, people who suffer from incurable diseases and homeless people and so on. We complain and focus too much on the things that could go wrong and the things that we do not have.
We all take the fact we can remember things, facts, experiences from our lives or others for granted, but what would it be like if all of a sudden our memory system breaks down?
