Dana Gioia offers convincing argument on the importance of reading, which has been dramatically declining for decades. In fact, an ability to read critically is fundamental for social interactions, range of thinking and even sustainability of society. To build the argument profoundly, author uses variety of facts and studies, personal anecdote and conclusions.…
He enjoys writing for entertainment the most. With each piece of writing, he conveys his purpose differently.…
What reasons for which do we write great stories? To entertain, is one. Shakespeare’s works, for example, were almost all written for entertainment - to be performed for an audience. As over four centuries later these works are still being analyzed and produced, it is obvious the purpose was achieved. A second reason is impact. Some stories are written to change lives, to engender a change in view. Another purpose may be to teach, such as The Boy In the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne. That novel was written to give an insight to the…
A good writer knows, at least a little, about how sentences work. A good writer can carry on a story without boring a reader. A good writer knows when to stop a bad idea, and how to create a great one. A good writer knows how to make their story work effectively in the reader’s mind.…
Thirdly, purpose can be used to help the reader determine the tone of text because it demonstrates how a speaker conveyed this context and what the speaker was trying to spark in the audience. Quote by Tom Clancy says, “The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense.” Roughly translates that the difference between reality and fiction would be that fiction has to be understandable. Reality doesn’t necessarily need an explanation, it is what it is. Most people are more likely to question fiction rather than questioning reality due to the fear of being wrong. Fear is a strong emotion that thrives in every human being in the world. Fear can either motivate or it intimidate a person, it all depends on who the person is. That…
According to John Steinbeck “It is the responsibility of the writer to expose our many grievous faults and failures and to hold up to the light our dark and dangerous dreams, for the purpose of improvement” Perhaps Steinbeck’s quote means, that the purpose of writer is to reveal ones faults and dreams for the goal of improvement. I believe Steinbeck’s quote is a valid remark. His words are so eloquently exemplified in, Unforgettable Miss Bessie by Carl T. Rowan and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.…
The author's own perspective and interpretation of his own life is very important also. Without the authors on view on his life, the book would no longer be an autobiography/memoir. It would most likely be based on what others have told him about his life which would cause it to ride the line between fiction and non-fiction. It's all about perspective and interpretation in The Things They Carried.…
For him, writing ignites a burning passion inside him, enabling him to find the words to write on a blank piece of paper and create the story.…
The most vivid memory I have of writing is back in the tenth grade. I had the best teacher ever in regards to writing. I used to view writing as a senseless waste of time. Writing, in my opinion, at the time was always noted to be formal and boring; however, my tenth grade English teacher, Mrs. Perez, changed my whole perception of writing and how it affects humanity. One day after class she pulled me aside and recommended a book known as, “His Dark Materials,” which is about a young girl who, with her allies, fought for the discovery of a dark substance called the “Dust.” The book single handedly altered my mental picture of writing and creativity. Writing can be about anything in the universe, and the possibilities are endless. The main point, however, which ties everything together, is imagination. One’s imagination can truly be defined as infinite to the power of infinite, because it contains numerous amounts of details and features on life and the world itself. How does this tie to writing one may ask. Well an elaborate imagination helps to create an elaborate piece of writing. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.”…

Everyone writes for different reasons. Writing allows us to tell a story through our own perspective. It allows us to pour all our thoughts and emotions into something that we otherwise might not speak about. Writing can spark ideas and memories we have and draw them out to be put into words on paper. It exercises our mind and our way of thinking. When you write you say what you mean. Some people use writing as an outlet, a way to express themselves or relieve stress and anxiety. It can be used for any purpose. Elie Wiesel uses his experience in the holocaust in a lot of his writing. He feels that he must be the one to tell the story of the victims, the ones who can’t tell it for themselves. As a survivor he is responsible for never letting anyone forget about it. I like to write about something I feel strongly about, something that makes me happy or makes me think, someone or something that has influenced me in different ways. For instance, when I visited Ireland a few years ago, the experience I had there is something I care so much about and it has affected me to such an extent that I want to write about it. The people in my life and the experiences I have had are topics that make me excited to write about.…
Purpose (What is the author’s aim? For example, is the piece descriptive or does it summarise the literature or introduce a new argument? Is the author trying to convince, persuade, or inform the reader? Use a verb.) (59)…
The essay “Why I am a writer” from Pat Mora explains why the author loves to write. She enjoys reading books and through her writing she would like others to discover the same joy she feels when she reads a book. She loves writing because she can find out more things about herself and also describe them. Most importantly she is a Hispanic writer and wants to share her ideas and stories because she believes it is important for Hispanics to take part in literature. I also think writing is a great way to express myself and my feelings to others because you can present your ideas in a more vivid way.…
Writers use what they know to make their work into something that can be treasured for years. They share what they know, they paint pictures with their words that allow their readers to get a glimpse of their lives and in some cases they use what is going on around them to share what they are feeling, or what they are not feeling. In some cases the writers use other pieces of literature or other people’s ideas to get their point across.…
