The Bean Trees Essay Example
Author use many symbolism in the book The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver. She uses symbolism because it makes it easier for readers to understand the deeper meaning or feeling of the character or the events that are happening. For example, author uses the symbolism of bean trees as transformation and Ismene as the abandoned children to show the deeper meaning of them. “Turtle was staring up at the wisteria flowers. “Beans,” she said, pointing... We looked where she was pointing. Some of the wisteria flowers had gone to seed, and all these wonderful long green pods hung down from the branches. They looked as much like beans as anything you’d ever care to eat.” (143-144). This quote is important because it’s the moment where the life of Turtle starts to change. The bean trees, another name for the wisteria vine that Turtle found at Dog Doo Park, symbolize the transformation. Transformation in this book is significant because Turtle has been abused, raped and been hurt which caused her to stop growing. But from this moment Turtle start to transform, start growing like a bean tree. A bean tree start off with a small, hard, and dry bean, first few days it seems like it will never grow but after few days, it will start to grow dramatically. This symbolizes the transformation of Turtle how now Turtle is a small, hard, and dry, not growing, but soon she will start to grow dramatically. “I was afraid to understand this. I asked him if he meant that Ismene was their daughter, and Estevan said yes, that she was. She was taken in a raid on their neighborhood in which Esperanza’s brother and two friends were killed... It’s hard to explain, but a certain kind of horror is beyond tears.” (136). This quote is significant in the book because it explains what happened to Estevan and Esperanza’s child Ismene. Ismene is important because it symbolizes all the abandoned children and twin of Turtle. Since we never met Ismene in the story, we only could see what she meant to her

Steinbeck uses symbolism to portray the allusion of the individual turtle’s straightforward actions to that of the hardships of the migrant worker’s journey to California. The wild oat symbolizes an obstacle that the turtle faced, originally being carried along with the turtle; A burden being carried in this instance. The spearhead seeds “stuck” in the ground from this burden, which conveys the idea of a permanent legacy being left behind, evidence that he overcame such. Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. Symbols are used throughout literature to further explain a major theme. For instance, Ernest Hemingway uses many symbols in “Hills Like White Elephants”. In Hemingway’s short story, the main characters are a man referred to as “the American,” and a women referred to as just “the girl” and sometimes the nickname jig, both the American and the girl are discussing something important but as the readers we do not know exactly what the two characters are communicating about. The symbols used in the short story, such as the landscape, white elephants, the train, and the beaded curtain, gives the readers an…

The most direct way in which an author reinforces the themes of a novel is through the use of literary devices. In Cloudstreet by Tim Winton, one of the most prominent of these devices is symbolism, which plays upon the aesthetic sensibilities harboured by the text's audience and provides insight and deeper understanding to the themes of the novel. Indeed, Cloudstreet itself, the river and religious symbolism contribute to meaning and the author's endorsement of love, family, determination, and spirituality in the search for completeness.…

techniques in How to Read Like a Professor ‘How to Read Like a Professor’ is a book that discusses several broad yet detailed techniques of reading. While I am positive everyone who reads this book knows how to read, they may not know how to read to fully comprehend all of a volume, even that which is not on the page. One such technique that really helps to reveal much about a story is symbolism, or the use of something to represent something else usually not in the story. Symbolism is important to know how to recognize because it can easily change a significant amount of a story. Some things are so closely associated with forces of nature that descriptions of the environment often infer undertones and meaning.…

Estrella’s mother, Petra, was left a long time ago by her husband. It is her circumstances that the reader is asked to relate with most. Estrella learns from her father’s disappearance that men cannot be trusted or depended on, and that women will usually always be left to take care of the family. Just as Petra has been abandoned physically by Estrella's father, and mentally by Perfecto, Estrella soon will come to be abandoned by Alejo. The fact that Perfecto has not married her mother, furthers this idea of lack of commitment made by the men in her life. “The eucalyptus trees lined the dirt road like a row of thin dancing girls fanning their feathers. Estrella knows the world of men and women through her mother Petra and Perfecto, ‘the man who was not her father’" (3). Viramontes is sympathetic to the men in some ways, but she does emphasize that when the men abandon the family, the women are left to endure for themselves and their children. Estrella and Alejo’s relationship, serves as a major basis for the author's allegation in this idea of suffering. Alejo’s death represents how once again a female is left behind. Estrella is the heart and soul of the novel and her love for Alejo, was more important than Alejo…
