Jason is to take part on a 12 month project in which at the first day of every month he will watch a video giving instruction to do that month. However if he gives Mr. Hamilton any trouble at all the project will be denied, and of he does not complete his assignment it will be revoked as well. When Jason first hears this he says “I knew that lazy old man wouldn’t leave me anything” (pg. 19), but then he comes around and decides to try it. In the beginning it was bitter work but it eventually got better.
As the twelve months pass, Jason Stevens progresses as a better person. Ms. Hastings can see it she even says “There may be hope yet” (pg. 74). He learned many lessons from his ventures, like what someone really needs in life. He fulfills all of the assignments. In the beginning he is greedy, and in the end he has the gifts of work, money, friends, learning, problems, family, laughter, dreams, giving, gratitude, and love. Red Stevens gave him all the things he needed to fulfill this and he realized that without the ultimate gift you are not living life to the fullest, and I think that what is the author was trying to get a crossed. As Red Stevens said “Any process you are going through will get tougher before it gets easier. That's what makes learning a gift, even though pain is your teacher.”(pg. 98) That is one of the lessons Jason had
