However, after Tom Robinson is convicted for a crime that he clearly did not commit, Atticus’ mercy for humanity begins to waver. Even though he knows that this case was inherently against Robinson, he still feels distraught that the jury was prejudiced enough to declare a man guilty, only because of the color of his skin. After the verdict, Atticus “... left the courtroom, but not by his usual exit. He must have wanted to go home the short way, because he walked quickly down the middle aisle toward the south exit… He did not look up.” (Lee, 215). Throughout the novel, Lee has created Atticus as the wise figure who seeks the goodness in everything.. He teaches Jem and Scout to walk in one’s shoes before judging them and that the surface of one's life does not accurately portray what is within. This scene shows that human malevolence can change Atticus’ attitude, despite how strongly he feels that every human has a part of them that is pure. Lee’s juxtaposition of Atticus’ character gives the reader insight on how an incident that involves the abuse of human virtue can change one’s attitude and…

You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view—until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.Chapter 7"As Atticus once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jem's skin and walk around in it: if I had gone alone to the Radley Place at two in the morning, my funeral would have been held the next afternoon. So I left Jem alone and tried not to bother him."Chapter 9"When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness' sake. But don't make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles 'em.""You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep…

Aunt Alexandra tells Jem and Scout they have to act like Finches. Initially, Atticus agrees with her, but says differently while he puts his children to bed, that “I don’t want you to remember it. Forget it.” (178). Atticus doesn’t want himself or his kids to act like the rest of their family. He likes everyone to think for themselves and be their own person. Again, Atticus is genuine when Heck is telling Atticus that Jem did not kill Bob Ewell, but in his shock, Atticus doesn’t believe him and thinks Tate is trying to cover up what Jem did. Atticus tells Mr. Tate that, “I don’t live that way.” (365). Atticus is an honest person, and he always tries to be honest and outright. He doesn’t act different around certain people or in certain social settings. As the Finches’ neighbor Miss Maudie Atkinson says, “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets.” (61).…

This part was showing that Atticus know so much more than most adults about the stages of what children go through in their life. Atticus shows that he knows children can tell when an adult is evading a question when he said “Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles ‘em.” (Lee 90). Atticus shows that not all adults seem to know that children can see evasion better than adult. It is shown that when Atticus has to tell his brother that children can see evasion better than adult. With both these statement shown above it shows that Atticus really does know what he is doing, it is just that the in the town can not see what he is doing for his children is really letting Jem and Scout figure out the what they want to know on their own and he will only help if they ask. Atticus has been able to keep Jem and Scout out of many differnet di that he did not want them to get, one would be the Maycomb’s disease also known as racism. Atticus has been a good parent for both Jem and Scout taught them…

Scout and Jem’s father, Atticus, is an honest white man who is defending an innocent Negro man, although he is frowned upon by others. The white folks of Maycomb County think that they have a higher social status than the black community, and that the views of a Negro does not matter. The most blatant example of racism in the novel is when Tom Robinson was convicted of raping Mayella Ewell. Although the people of the town know that Tom Robinson was innocent, the jury still saw him as guilty because he is an African American man, and would never be able to win over a white man. This jury ruling causes both those who encouraged Robinson’s conviction and those who were convinced of his innocence to question their views of justice and fairness. This decision forces Scout and Jem to confront the fact that the beliefs that Atticus has taught them cannot always be accustomed with the reality of the world and the evils of human nature. Even their neighbor, Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose, who the children are scared of, is racist and calls Atticus a "nigger-lover" to his children. The children despise of her and “hated her. If she was on the porch when [they] passed, [they] would be raked by her wrathful gaze, subjected to ruthless interrogation regarding our behavior, and given a melancholy prediction on what [they] would amount to when [they] grew up, which was always nothing”…

Dill is important in the exploration of a main theme, families. He helps the children appreciate the relationship of Jem and Scout and their father, Atticus. He is an important reminder to the children that families are not always there to support you and is a contrast to the happy family of Atticus, Jem and Scout. Dills family also shows that life is very rarely perfect, even if it may seem like it is from the outside, as Dill seems happy and care-free, when actually he is labored by a secret that he cannot forget about and is at first ashamed by. “Dill blushed and Jem told me to hush” is what happens when Scout asks Dill about his father.…
