Ques 1) How do Adults Learn? How is Andragogy different from Pedagogy? What is the role of appropriate climate setting in desired training outcomes?
Andragogy (adult learning) is a theory that holds a set of assumptions about how adults learn. Andragogy is derived from the Greek word meaning ‘adult’.Andragogy emphasizes the value of the process of learning.
There are following adult learning principles proposed:
1. Adults bring life experiences and knowledge to learning experiences.
2. Adult learners like to be respected.
3. Adults learn best when they are free to determine what, how and when they should learn.
4. Adults have a very sharp sense of understanding what is their benefit in learning and in loss not learning.
5. Adults are goal oriented and practical.
Therefore Adult learns by providing real or stimulated experience through which the learners experience the benefit of knowledge and the costs of not knowing something. The dictum to be followed in adult education is to develop a need to know what the learning has to offer
Difference between Andragogy and Pedagogy
a) In pedagogy model the learner the learner is dependent upon the instructor for all learning whereas In andragogy model the learner is self-directed. The learner is responsible for his own learning.
b) In pedagogy model content units are sequenced according to the logic of the subject matter whereas In andragogy model learning must have relevance to real life tasks. Learning is organized around life/work situations rather than subject matter units.
c) In pedagogy model the learner comes to the activity with little experience that could be trapped as a resource of learning. The experience of the instructor is most influential whereas In andragogy model the learners bring a greater volume and quality of experience. Adults are rich
