Resource: Ch. 4 of Visualizing Environmental Science

Conservation and preservation activities are currently part of all national forest management programs. The “Bridger Teton Environmental Science” video discusses the controversy between those who want to harvest the resources of one section of the forest in an environmentally friendly way and others who believe it should be left in its original state.

Dear local newspaper editor,

I am writing you this letter to inform you of a gigantic dilemma we as human beings living on earth have to face. Bridger Teton one of the most beautiful places on earth, untouched by man and wild in nature is at risk of complete destruction. Now I know what you are thinking complete destruction how is this possible? Humans that is how, there is a movement to turn that land into spots for drilling and mining oils and other natural resources that if we act upon will bring upon the destruction of one of the country’s last true eco systems. The wild animals that roam, hunt, and live there are at risk as well as all the vegetative life. If you look at the four steps of environmental risk assessment you will find that in no way we should develop on this land to acquire natural resources. There is just too much to lose, how can we bring it to ourselves to destroy such a beautiful and untouched piece of nature when there are

The risk assessment is made up of five stages, firstly you should identify any hazards that are a risk to health this could be anything from the equipment used to the working conditions. Then you must consider the people who could be harmed by the hazard and how. You then must evaluate the risk and decide whether the precautions already in place are adequate or whether more should be done to prevent harm. You should then record your findings and include a detailed plan of action that you are going to take and finally review your assessment and revise if necessary.…

Preservation is maintaining the earth keeping it in its original condition. Some areas of the Earth are, so far, untouched by humans. This is due to the concern that mankind is encroaching onto the environment at such a rate that many untamed landscapes are being given over to farming, industry, housing, tourism and other human developments, and that we our losing too much of what is 'natural'.…

New Hampshire, with 78.4% forest cover, is currently the second most forested state in the country with Maine being the first. However, the forest cover has been steadily declining since the 1980s. “This loss is about 17,500 acres per year, mostly due to land development” and “Every day, the average person in the USA will consume about 4.5 pounds of wood, that 's a little over a third of a two-by-four. Over the course of a year, that adds up to a 16-18" tree, a hundred feet tall” (Forest Service). Each year, the nation plants more than 5 new trees for each American. Wood is a renewable resource. As long as forests are not converted by development, harvesting trees does not result in an increase of carbon in the atmosphere. Today there are certain foundations and things to do to prevent deforestation. Although we need wood to cut down for certain things, we plant three trees for every tree we cut down. This is called the 3 to 1 Ratio by Society Protecting New Hampshire Forest’s.…

Checkpoint: Conserve and Preserve Tania Torres After make a research about the meaning of terms preservation and conservation I found a lots of debates to the respect. After my research I can define conservation like the wise use of the natural resources maintaining the sustainability of them for future generations. The term preservation can be define as do not use the natural resources and maintain them as natural as possible. In other words avoid the human interference with the natural resources, to keep them naturals. Those terms create a great debate. For some, the humans cannot harvest forest natural resources in an environmental friendly way, but I believe that it is possible. I think that actually we have a lot of new technology that can be used to conserve our human resources and maintain the sustainability. I believe we could have the better of the two worlds. Sometimes the end justified the means. For example although it is great that actually we can have a public land that has remained virtually untouched by human presence, but I think that the proposed use for this land can beneficial for much more people than hisactual use. I think that how the speaker said in the video, actually energy companies have a lot of new environmental friendly technology that allow them to use the resources wisely and conserve the land.
