Civilization: an advanced state of human society, in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and government has been reached.
Historian: Someone who studies the past
Archaeologist: Someone who studies the past by looking at artifacts
Fossil: Natural remains
Artifact: Man-made remains
Anthropologist: Someone who studies the past by looking at the culture of ancient civilizations
Paleontologist: Someone who studies the past by looking at fossils
Geologist: Someone who studies the past by looking at nature (rocks, mountains, moss, etc.)
Polis: City-state
Acropolis: the citadel or high, fortified area of a city-state
Minoans: Lived on the island of Crete, strong navy, advanced civilization; had written language and left behind records and paintings
Mycenaeans: “Heroic Age”; fought with anyone; written language and paintings of heroes
Dorians: Inhabited Crete; fought with Ionians in the Peloponnesian War
Oracle: “priestesses of Apollo”; predicted the future from the temples of Apollo, which were really caves with toxic gases
Theseus and the Minotaur: Greek myth where Theseus defeats Minotaur, half-human and half-bull, and becomes King of the Greek people. He decides he doesn’t want to rule over them and gives the power to the people.
