My job is to hire a sales manager who will sell the latest fiber optics to leading wireless manufacturers of five key companies. Some of the job requirements are that the sales representative must be articulate, sophisticated, and knowledgeable about fiber optics. The job also requires travel Monday through Friday in order for the sales representative to work with those in the prospective company. The job also requires spending leisure time after 5:00 P.M. with prospective clients. I have four prospective employees to choose from. Jake is a Certified Public Accountant who made a career switch to sales. He is single and wants to devote time to his career in order to be successful. As at now Jake has no sales experience whatsoever and will be a liability to the company. Lynn is an IT Manager who was a math major and minored in computer analysis. She is a people person and working on improving her English-speaking skills. She graduated top of her class and wrote a paper on fiber optics in relation to cell towers which was published in a peer-reviewed journal. She is a leading expert in the fiber optics field but does not possess any sales skills. Karen is a Sales Representative who has been in sales for five years. She is relocating to Atlanta because she is getting married in the next month. She also graduated at the top of her class in fiber optic engineering. There is the need to avoid tagging not hiring Karen as discrimination (DeVry, 2011) Since she is getting married soon and may not have the luxury of leaving home and travelling on business trips it will not be financially sound to hire her for the job.
Jyoti is a Manager of Wireless Retail Store. She was in sales at her last job and did extremely well. She managed a wireless phone company’s regional sales office. She trained salespeople and due to her expertise in sales,
