06.07 Disillusionment: Assignment

Question: Explain how events such as the Vietnam War and Watergate affected the American public’s opinion of the U.S government.

Part I: Read the question above and write down what you think the question is asking in your own words. I think that this question is asking for the American public perception of the US government and their elected officials during both of these events. Both the Vietnam War and Watergate events had big impacts on American society. For example, the Vietnam War was the first war to be televised in color, but a lot of the baby boom generation were either in the war or against the war. The Watergate event made Americans feel let down because of the mistrust in the US government.

Part II: Use an Internet search engine (such as Google, Yahoo or Bing) to find sources that would help you answer the question. Try to use the advanced search option to limit the number of results. * You must choose four sources to complete this portion of the assignment. * Two on Watergate * Two on the Vietnam War * You must have at least two different types of sources. Your sources could include a news or magazine article, a topic website, an online encyclopedia, or video. * Submit the following information: * What search engine did you use? * What words did you type into the search engine to get your results? * What sources did you choose? Provide the web address and title of each source. Vietnam: 1) Search Engine: Google 2) Words used: “What were the effects of media during the Vietnam War” 3) Title of source: The Effects of the Vietnam War 4) Type of source: Topic Website 5) Web address: http://www.cyberlearning-world.com/nhhs/html3/vet.htm

E: The Vietnam war was a very interesting war considering it was really the first war that the American people could see what was happening in Vietnam because of television and media. Because of this the American people were outraged from seeing the horrors of war and what it brought and quickly started demonstrating their opinions against it. During this politicians tried to cover up the horrors of war by saying that we were winning completely and that there was no need to fear. This is an abuse of media because it making something seem like it isn’t. Eventually one reporter, Walter Cronkite, decided to discover the truth.…

The Vietnam War was a controversial war that caused much anger and resentment in the United States. The war began in 1959 as a result of the United States attempting to stop communism from spreading throughout Vietnam and to the rest of the world (Vietnam War). Communism had taken effect in parts of Vietnam, and the United States feared that allowing Vietnam to become a communist nation would create a Domino Effect, resulting in every nation becoming communist. So in order to stop communism, President Johnson sent in troops to North Vietnam in March of 1965 (Vietnam War). But what Johnson failed to anticipate was the antiwar and peace movements that this would create back home in the US. Johnson's failure to inform US citizens about their commitment in Vietnam led to the growth of the “largest and most effective antiwar movement in American history.” (The Vietnam War and Civil Rights Movement). Peace rallies, speeches, marches, teach-ins, creation of civil rights organizations, and rebellion all took place in the US as a result of the growing violence in Vietnam, as well as the US government’s lack of communication to the public about the realities of the war. Although the Civil Rights Movement began long before the Vietnam War in 1948 when Truman signed Executive Order 9981 (Civil Rights Timeline), the Vietnam War caused the movement to grow immensely, and it spread across the nation.…

Throughout the country, the Watergate Scandal changed the lives of many Americans as well as America itself. Many Americans have different opinions about what happened with the Watergate Scandal. President Nixon did many things well during his Presidency, but one mistake changed his whole career and the way people thought of him. If someone makes a mistake in life the best thing you can do is admit what they did. Nixon covered up the evidence and had to pay for it. When a person commits a wrong doing, sooner or later they will get caught. If a person gets trapped in a bad situation, there should always be a way to get out of it. Nixon was not organized and had no control of his men, so it was hard to prevent his situation. Not everyone is perfect…

The overall topic of my research is the Vietnam War, but I will be exploring more in depth how the media illustrates not only the war but also the effect of the war on the homeland of the United States. During the Vietnam war there were many problems facing soldiers, citizens, and the United States as a whole country. The media has the power to bring all of these problems and truths to light in ways such as films, so in my paper I will see how the media has captured the history of the United States during the war and its’ effects into modern day films in order to inform the public of the brutal time period.…

Lyndon B. Johnson presidency has been tormented ever since he left office. One main event that downgraded his presidency the most was the Vietnam War. When a majority of Americans remember of the Vietnamese War, Johnson’s portrait pops up in their minds. Some people blame Johnson for starting and losing the war. While, I just want to say that these people are just arrogant; these people do not look at the facts. Johnson once said, “I did not start the war, but inherited it.” After World War II, Ho Chi Minh and the People's Congress create the National Liberation Committee of Vietnam to form a provisional government. This Committee had…

The Vietnam War was a war of mass destruction, leaving Vietnam to become bitterly divided and claiming the many lives of Vietnamese civilians as well as American soldiers. Out of all the wars in American history, the Vietnam War was the first war to be broadly televised and covered by the media. It came to be known as the first “Television War”. Journalists began to pour into Vietnam from all over the nation, to cover the lives of the American Soldiers as well as Vietnamese civilians. As television brought horrendous images of the war into American living rooms, the perception of an American solider as a hero slowly became the image of the American enemy. Thus, the media is a major factor that resulted to the Vietnamization of the conflict, following the end of the war during the fall of Saigon.…
