Pupil voice promotes inclusion as it is all about including all children and having equal rights. Its key principles are to encourage children participation and consultation. The Education Act 2002:176 legislation states that ‘Parties shall assure to the child who is capable of forming his or her own views has the right to express those views freely in all matters affecting the child’. The original concept was created by Jean Rudduck since the early 1960’s, she had been looking at the role of pupil voice strategies in developing effective teaching methods and learning in the classroom. There are many advantages to pupil voice in schools, it gives all children the opportunity to express their thoughts and discuss things that matter to them. They will also feel more respected and it will increase empowerment and autonomy as they are involved in decision making.
