Peron Centred Practice places a person at the centre of their care. By doing this it can lead to many positive changes in an individual’s life. Empowering an individual to make their own choices and decisions can lead to positive change as they feel involved in their care. It is no use guiding an individual into doing certain activities or making decisions, treatment will be more successful if it is based on a person’s actually interests and wishes.
Person centred practice is based upon caring for a person in a personalised way. If a person is listened to and their choices respected it can help them to feel supported. If a service user is cared for as an individual and their choices and wishes are listened to and acted upon it can help a person to feel supported. If a person feels supported and that their wishes are listened to it can help them to respond well to their treatment plan.
Each service user needs to be treated as an individual and supported in a way depending on their needs. If a service user is not treated in a person centred way and their choices not respected it can lead to;
Withdrawal from care and treatment plans
Isolation
Displaying challenging behaviour
Service users need to be treated as an individual, a way in which you care and treat one service user may be different to the way you care for another, depending on their needs. If a service user is treated in a person centred way it can help build up trust and a good rapport with staff, this could lead to more successful treatment for an individual. If a person feels they are not being supported they may not engage with their care. If a person engages with their care it could help to move a person forward with their life, giving them more independence and more hope for the future.
