Child soldiers are recruited in many ways. Some children are under the age of 10 when they are forced to join the military (10 Facts about Child Soldiers, 2003). Joining an armed force might be the best choice for a children since some join as a route out of poverty (Who …show more content…
are Child Soldiers, 2016). The reason children are chosen is because they are easier to manipulate. These children are forced to join because they are starving and do not have a shelter, so the military is their best choice of survival. A promise of a warm meal and a piece of clothes can be enough for a child to volunteer to join. It is highly probable that children living in conflict areas will be deprived of basic needs such as shelter, food and medical attention. Children unknowingly pay the price for the cause they cannot even understand or justify (Humans Rights Watch, 2001). Therefore in the chaos if armed conflicts children are often separated from their family (Who are Child Soldiers, 2016). When children are recruited they can be used in propaganda to achieve political advantage (Child Soldiers, 2017). Children who are not forced to be soldiers volunteer themselves because they feel societal pressure and are under the impression that volunteering will provide a form of income, food or security. Children who are poor, displaced from their families have limited access to education, or live in a combat zone are more likely to be forcibly recruited (10 Facts about Child Soldiers, 2003). These ways of recruitment are harsh to the children and their families. There is not right to use a kids live in any type of war
Child soldiers are all around the world but mostly in Africa.
There are more than 300,000 child soldiers and 10-30% of them are girls (Humans Rights Watch, 2001). In the last 15 years child soldiers has almost spread in every region of the world (10 Facts about Child Soldiers, 2003). There are child soldiers in 14 countries today. Some of the major countries are Uganda, Syria and Iraq. Uganda has more than 30,000 child soldiers (Children in Conflict, 2003). Child soldiers is legal but most countries signed the OPAC (Operational Protocol on the involvement of children in Armed conflicts)(Who are Child Soldiers, 2016). Since 2001 child soldiers have been recruited in 28 armed conflicts all around the world. At least 43 state armed forces train children for armed conflict but do not normally use them in this way until they turn 18(Who are Child Soldiers, 2016). In countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka and Uganda one third or more of child soldiers reported to be girls. Child soldiers in Sierra Leone terrorized civilians by cutting off hands and arms. for.
People all around the world are trying to put an end to child soldiers.
Child soldiers Africa is on the increase (Child Soldiers, 2017). There are groups that are trying to stop child soldiers and hold people accountable such as SOS children. SOS children works in many countries to help put an end to child soldiers (Children in Conflict, 2003). In the last 2 years, 2 states reported to have child soldiers in government (10 Facts about Child Soldiers, 2003). Over the last ten years, two million children have been killed in conflict because they were once soldiers (Children in Conflict, 2003). Military recruitment of children is gradually being outlawed, but 50 countries still allow it. Many non-state armed groups also recruit children (Who are Child Soldiers, 2016). Two thirds of states confirm that enrollment of soldiers under the age of 18 should be banned to prohibit forced child soldiers (10 Facts about Child Soldiers, 2003). The United Nations launched the children, not soldiers campaign last to end the recruitment and use of child soldiers in government forces by 2016. In December 2014 the former commander-in-chief of the forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo was the first convicted of the crime by the ICC (International Criminal Court). The Rome Statute, which created the ICC that enter in force in 2002 made it a war crime to conscript or enlist children under the age of 15. This being said it is now a crime to all countries to have child soldiers under the age of
15 (Sorting Facts, 2012).
Child Soldiers have very dangerous jobs and missions. Thousands of children are serving as soldiers in armed conflicts today. The use of children for act of terror has emerged as a phenomenal of modern warfare (Child Recruitment, 2006). Regardless of how children are recruited and of their roles, child soldiers are victims (Child Recruitment, 2006). Some child soldiers are forced to kill their family so they have nothing to return to. Also many child soldiers are apart of rebel within their countries. The girls that are soldiers are sometimes even raped by the commander or leader and is most likely to become their wife. Children can also be human shields that that the adults will use in war to protect themselves (10 Facts about Child Soldiers, 2003). The children that go to war can be also used as a psychological weapon to the enemies into thinking that they are friendly. In today’s war weapons are much lighter and easier to use so teenagers are not at a disadvantage (Humans Rights Watch, 2001). One of the common task for these children is a porter, often carrying heavy loads (Child Recruitment, 2006). These kids might fight on the front line or even in suicide missions to help their side to win. War affects every aspects of a child’s development therefore war is not the right decisions for kids (Child Recruitment, 2006). There are campaigns to prevent child recruitment such as Support reintegration the return of child soldier to their families and communities and Hold those who have used children for military purpose (Who are Child Soldiers, 2016). Former child soldiers may at best have their needs forgotten and at worst be blamed by their communities for what happened (Children in Conflict, 2003)
The treatment child soldiers received is very harsh. The family or state are often not the one to blame for child soldiers because some of the children are forced to go into the military. In 2002 the Optional Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed conflicts put an end to recruitment of underage soldiers therefore there should no longer be child soldiers in those countries that sign the OPAC. The involvement of children in war also raises an ethical dilemma (Humans Rights Watch, 2001). Children are deliberately targeted as they are manipulated more easily than adults (Children in Conflict, 2003). The girls in the military may be forced into sexual slavery since there is no women soldiers (Child Recruitment, 2006). Some of these children will never grow up to a normal life because they were once soldiers at such a young age and did not experience the teenage life (Humans Rights Watch,2001). At the end child soldiers lac rehabilitation but some goes back to their family (10 Facts about Child Soldiers 2003).
Obviously, this shows that child soldiers are treated awfully and should be abolished. People are trying their best to help stop child soldiers and it is still going on today. The recruitment of these children needs to be put a end. This is important to understand because these children do not get to live normal child life like most children do. They do not get to go to school, they do not see their family and they do not get to play games or sports. All children need to live a normal life, regardless of race, sex, religion, poverty, or locations. Everyone should want the best for our future.
