Tragedies come at unexpected times and greatly impact people’s lives. For Roseann Sdoia, the impact was life-long. “‘I still don’t comprehend what happened,’ she said. ‘I have to say it numerous times that I was in a bombing. I still don’t realize I don’t have a leg. I still don’t realize this will last a lifetime.’” (Morris) Sdoia, a 45 year old Caucasian woman, stated these words in her interview regarding her experience at the 2013 Boston Marathon explosion. The negative emotions towards Muslims that had been lying dormant from the September 11 tragedy erupted once again after the instigation of this catastrophe and since April, the nation had been viewing media that sensationalized the fear and hysteria about radical Muslim factions, leading to the more current ISIS gaining more traction in the mass media. However, the overwhelming majority at the Boston Marathon would show that people gave incredible support to one another despite any sort of racial and religious differences. Just like Rossean’s story, there is a large number of recovering individuals who were rescued and built up by altruistic individuals at the Boston Marathon. Social connection during a tragedy is a part of the human race’s history and natural make up. The acute stress helps remind people of a fundamental truth: the state of a common humanity which then lowers barriers as focuses are changed from the self to support.
