Until I was three years old, I was having fun as a toddler by myself. Although, a month before my fourth birthday, I received a beautiful baby sister named Kinsley Ann Kemper. Little did I know that within about nine years she was going to become an ornery child. When she was little, my parents had to set rules for me to follow because they knew that I could follow the rules that they gave me, while they were taking care of Kinsley. Also, when I was three, I started to go to dance. My first year of dance, I got an award for the dancer of the year, which made me very overjoyed and excited at the same time. I can still remember…
A quiet evening in the fire station is abruptly broken when the alarms blare and the dispatcher is heard giving prompt information about the caller and the given address. Regardless of what the first responders are doing when the call is received they drop whatever it is and quickly head to the truck bay and head into their vehicles. Even if they were sound asleep or eating the first meal of the day they go to where they are needed. Quickly they turn on the vehicles and the sirens and cut through traffic to reach their destination as soon as possible. The weather or dangers present do not matter as we are here to brave it all.…
On April 22, 2017, five classmates and I took part volunteering at the 9Health Fair. Before showing up we all were e-mailed instructions on the Health fair protocols for taking blood pressure (BP), performing Body Mass index (BMI) and pulse oximetry (02 sat). When arriving we all kind of gravitated to a station. I ended up working with Allie and Karen in the BP/02 sat Station. When the fair began, it seemed that we were pretty slow, so I volunteered to stand by the blood draw station informing patients where our BP/O2 Sat stations was located. While working the line trying to get customers to our station, I heard a thump. One of the people who had their blood drawn, stood up and then fell straight back to the ground. I watch as this…
Parents strive to teach their children about possible future mistakes in a lame attempt of protecting the child from having to experience the mistakes himself, but truthfully, experience presents the best lessons. You can warn a child to not touch a hot stove and he may listen at first. However, his curiosity and naturally rebellious tendencies will tempt him until he experiences first-hand the dangers of the stove. He will not have the lesson engrained in his mind until he feels the scorching heat on his own fingertips. This lesson holds…
At this age children start to question whether parents are infallible and may think perhaps these people in charge don’t know it all. This strong sense of “should do” and “should not do” sets some children up to tell tales.…

My name is Tiffany Perdue. I’m currently seventeen years old and have lived in many places throughout my life. I have attended Newton High School on and off during my high school career and while here I have learned a few things. I have learned about the career path, about friendship, about the struggles of life, and mostly I have learned about myself and who I am.…
This would not be bad, if my father’s favorite framed picture was not on the wall. Additionally, my cousin and I kept throwing the balls on the wall, trying not to hit the picture. Well this time, I did not hit the picture, but my cousin did, and I was the one who got yelled at. My mother told me not to do it, but I did not listen, therefore, I was yelled at for being irresponsible. The framed picture fell off the wall and a corner was chipped. Afraid, my mother did not tell my father. Until this day, he still does not know how the corner was chipped. My mother gave me another spanking and told me she loved me and I needed to listen better. I have learned many valuable lessons in my…
Education 203 with Dr. Smith has been a very enjoyable and entertaining class. I really liked the teaching style, curriculum and format of the class. I have definitely had a meaningful learning experience from this class. This class has taught me about important topics in life and topics that will be significant to me when I become a teacher.…
Freshman year was a learning experience with growing pains. I had preconceived notions of what it would be like as a Black male at a Predominately White Institution. I believed that I would be in a diverse place where I could meet people from different backgrounds and life experiences. I was extremely excited to begin this journey, and being a member of the Honors program made me even more excited. However, that excitement quickly turned into shock and disbelief, when people questioned whether I belonged at UNC in the honors program. It was an isolating experience, being the only Black male in a room, and people having stop their conversations and stare at me.…
The culmination of my tutoring sessions with Amira was satisfying on several levels. When I began my tutoring with Amira, she was reserved and shy and it was difficult to engage her in conversation; I had yet to form a bond with her where she felt comfortable interacting with me. By the time I had finished my tutoring sessions with Amira, she was much less reserved and had opened up to me in a way where she felt comfortable in everyday conversation, in responding to questions and in reading aloud to me. Her personality emerged which was gratifying to observe. Amira will likely always be a shy student, but it is possible to draw her out and form a satisfactory teacher, student relationship conducive to learning.…

Every “blue day” at the York High School begins with my block one class: Chorus. I cannot say that Chorus has been one of my favorite classes, or even a class a specifically liked, however I can say that I have learned lessons that I will worship forever. I realize that I have been given the opportunity to grow musically, but for me this class was much more. I often thought of this class as a course that was required, but when stories were shared, and observations were collected in my mind, I realized that this class was so much more. I learned the importance of trying new things and always giving myself the ability to grow.…
One Saturday, Mom took me and my sisters to the park for my mom’s co-worker’s daughter’s birthday party. I really didn’t know the daughter that well; I had just seen her before. I had to introduce myself to everyone who was there. The birthday girl was having a good time, and I was sitting at the table looking at everyone and talking to my sisters about the other people. I went up to the girls’ grandparents and asked them “Why do you have two different colors on your face and arms?” and I kept going on and on. My mom is a social butterfly and was having a good time meeting everyone when she noticed I was talking to the grandparents. My mom also knew I was asking those questions because she knows me. Then my mother can up to me at the table and told me “Alyssa, you need to treat others how you would want others to treat you.” I didn’t understand what my mom meant, so I kept asking questions. Since I was a little girl I didn’t know right from wrong. Whatever was on mind, I would just say it out loud. Even if the people I talked about could hear me. Every time I asked questions, people would answer in a sad voice because they looked down and pause before they answer.…
