9health Fair Reflection
On April 22, 2017, five classmates and I took part volunteering at the 9Health Fair. Before showing up we all were e-mailed instructions on the Health fair protocols for taking blood pressure (BP), performing Body Mass index (BMI) and pulse oximetry (02 sat). When arriving we all kind of gravitated to a station. I ended up working with Allie and Karen in the BP/02 sat Station. When the fair began, it seemed that we were pretty slow, so I volunteered to stand by the blood draw station informing patients where our BP/O2 Sat stations was located. While working the line trying to get customers to our station, I heard a thump. One of the people who had their blood drawn, stood up and then fell straight back to the ground. I watch as this …show more content…
Having worked for the NKF before and from classroom work I know that kidney disease is irreversible and early detection is important. This fair did not discriminate in any fashion, which is very important in reaching out to as many people as possible. Many of the fair event were free to include the kidney screening test. This helped to make this fair afforded and culturally sensitive to everyone. I learned from this fair that nurses can help their community by volunteering their time at fairs. That they can reach so many people at one time by just taking a BP, height and figuring out BMI. I hope to always want to help out at this fair, so I can continue to give to my community. I also learned about my value system during this fair. That it is very important to give accurately result and not fudge them. People lives depend on me to know what I am doing and I need to have integrity to always do the right thing with others are not looking. This fair is a rewarding fair to work out because you are constantly helping people and working on your learned schools. Nursing school has helped to strength my medical knowledge and I have been able to use this knowledge and skills helping people at this fair. Lastly, I found an article on the importance of taking

In February 1998 12 year old Tiffany Applewhite went into anaphylactic shock and her heart stopped after a nurse gave her a shot of steroids for an eye condition in her family’s apartment. Tiffany’s mother called 911, and the city sent two medics in an ambulance. That ambulance didn’t have the advanced life support equipment that Tiffany needed, and the paramedics failed to bring oxygen or a defibrillator. Tiffany’s mother had pleaded with the paramedics to take her daughter to the nearby Montefiore Hospital. Instead, they advised her to wait for the private ambulance with advanced life support equipment to arrive. When that ambulance arrived 20 minutes later, paramedics gave her epinephrine and oxygen and transported her to Montefiore. She…

This is just one of many incidents to illustrate the need for the reduction of waiting time in emergency rooms across the nation. Although this is an isolated incident that shows gross negligence, similar events that are not as negligent, but just as irritating for patients, happen every day. The "wait" in the emergency room…

I feel like I’m in an episode of ER or Grey's Anatomy without the pretty people. There were rows and rows of people on gurneys in the hallways. Waiting for a room? Is Michelle going to be one of them? Then there were cops everywhere and they were taking reports and I looked in one room and a woman’s face was completely bloody. And then I heard the word attacked and realized this must be the norm here. Well I guess Michelle was lucky because we got right in a room. So now Michelle is still really, really out of it and they hook her up to oxygen and try to get her hydrated. In the course of being there we saw about six different nurses and two different doctors. She had a chest x-ray, EKG and blood work done and little by little her blood pressure started coming back to normal. All I wanted was to take her home. I hated to leave the room to find a bathroom because I was afraid of what I was going to see out there. You see I can't watch TV medical shows because I faint at the sight of blood. I kept my head down and found a bathroom without getting lost. Finally 14 hours later at 10:30 p.m. we got to go…

When I submitted my paper to Smartthinking for review I was certain there would be a few corrections presented and I would simply apply those minor tweaks to my work and I would move on to the next week a little more prepared than I was at the beginning of Unit 1. I was amazed at some of the suggestions. I am also amazed at how those suggestions made my paper a much better piece of writing.…

Skills competency fairs are held annually by most healthcare facilities. They are usually organized and managed by nursing managers and nursing educators. Skills competency fairs allow staff to demonstrate competence with nursing skills that are used daily to provide optimal patient care. The primary goal of these fairs is to ensure competency of the staff, to achieve positive outcomes for patients (Roman, 2015). Before planning the fair, nursing managers and nursing educators come together and collaborate to create a list of necessary competencies that staff need to be competent in at their facility. This list of competencies must meet regulatory and hospital requirements.…

When reflecting over this past semester and my time in Medical surgical three, I have seen a great deal improvement in understanding of different medical care and various conditions. I improved my knowledge through the use of assigned readings, case studies, and other different assignments. When I first began this course I had a very limited knowledge about different medical conditions and how to care for these types of patients. The first day of class I was surprised by the content and the pace it was conveyed, I was very glad that I had brought my recording so that I could catch all the information that was being taught.…

Even before this assignment was introduced, I was fully aware that this class was to be mainly focused on community health promotions and the importance of it. I was aware that we were going to learn about the fundamentals of health promotion and how it was done in different parts of the world. But what I wasn’t aware of was that the entire class was to partake in promoting good health in our own community via the Health Fair! When the assignment was first introduced, my initial thinking was that working in groups was something I personally never really favored in the past. Then there was the actual interaction with the community, specifically those who are at the flea market. I have been to the flea market before and I was particularly worried about the language barrier since most of those who go to the flea market were Spanish speakers; let alone none of our team members had any Spanish background other than basic high school training. Not only this, but the whole idea of promoting good health to a community with only over a month’s worth of preparation and learning health promotions from scratch was all a bit too overwhelming for me. Normally, this would have been the kind of class I would have dropped right away. I’m glad I didn’t because the Health Fair was definitely an experience I would never forget.…

I arrived on the ward at 7.00am ready to begin a 10 hour shift. After receiving handover my mentor assigned me the job of bed bathing Mr T with the help of a health care assistant. Mr T was admitted with a broken radius and ulna; this means that your forearm is made up of two long bones that sit side by side. The inside bone is called the ulna, and the outside bone is called the radius. You have broken both bones. A fracture means just the same as a break. The bone ends are out of line and may be overlapping. Without an operation, the bones would heal, but not in their correct position. You would not be able to turn your hand from palm up to palm down. (NetDoctor, 2009) also Mr T was recently diagnosed with Tay-Sachs disease before he was admitted; this is a rare, inherited disease. It causes too much of a fatty substance to build up in tissues and nerve cells of the brain. This build up destroys the nerve cells, causing mental and physical problems. (NINDS, 2011) He was 19 years old which is rare because it is usually developed in infancy. (KidsHealth, 2010) He was mentally aware of what was going on but physically unable to demonstrate activities of daily living, including eating and drinking, as limited communication skills and is doubly incontinent. He is unsafe on his feet so mobilises in a wheelchair.…

Therefore, I spent the majority of the fair running the table by myself. Even without supervision, the students were polite and they never approached the table as a group. Therefore, I never felt overwhelmed. As a student walked up to our table, I would have them spin the wheel of wellness. Once the wheel stopped and the arrow pointed to a category, I would read them one of the pre-made questions. These questions were incredibly interesting and generated conversation with the students. After the game, I would inform them about the services held at the health promotion office and encourage them to take any of the brochures that interest them. I was surprised that numerous students took a brochure, which made me elated since it displays the student’s desire to change a behavior or learn more about what they can…

The health fair was a great experience not only for the public, but also for all the nursing students. We all learned new things, especially the people that had no idea what BMI was, and we encountered old classmates along the way. Each member did their assigned work plus more, which was shown in the health fair presentation. Some members of the team brought activities and snacks that were related to the BMI presentation for the public to enjoy as they illustrated their minds with knowledge of BMI and related factors. The most interesting contribution that I did was teaching/educating the public about BMI and related benefits and complications of given BMI values. For example, a BMI of 30 or higher could bring cardiovascular problems, higher…

The first thing I noticed in Dr. Jose Rizal’s life was that he lived a simple one. He did not choose to have a luxurious life like the most of us have wanted. Even before he became under surveillance by the Spaniards, he had lived his life as simple as possible. I think it was the work of his parents that made him lived like this. I strongly believe that one’s lifestyle is influenced mostly by their parents. I learned from the life of Rizal the importance of taking part of the parents to their children’s morals.…
