For as long as
I can remember I have been around farm animals. My grandmother has had sheep for many years. As a kid I was always at her farm, constantly helping her with anything I could. From that moment I knew that I needed to be involved in 4-H. At the age of NUMBER I could start showing my sheep in 4-H sheep shows at the fairs that I had been traveling to for years with my family. At the age of, NUMBER I remembered looking up to the 17 and 18 year-olds and thinking they were like super-heros. I soon got to work alongside of these nineteen year-olds, with help from them in my first years of showing. My favorite part of being involved in 4-H is being able to enjoy working with other 4-H’ers in my area. I could not think of a better way to grow up, than in the show ring along with all of my life long 4-H friends.
The thing that I will take away and remember forever from 4-H will be all of the life lessons and responsibilities that it has taught me. From the first show to my last I will always be practicing my responsibility, preparation skills and time management skills. Before each show I have a few days to get all of my animals ready and prepared properly for the show. This takes a lot of time management skills and many late nights of determination and hard work. People often think that showing sheep is easy but I would say the exact opposite. I have poured everything I have into showing in the show ring, but feel rewarded for my hard work when you bring out a blue ribbon. I have also learned how to have fun with friendly competition. It is a lot of pressure in the ring when everyone is watching you and you are competing against some of your best friends since you could walk. I have learned so many life lessons through 4-H that I will always use outside of the show ring and for the rest of my life.
Thinking back to my childhood I am so glad that I got the amazing opportunity to become involved in 4-H. It has become something that has changed me for the better and something that I hope will change my kids as they will be involved in 4-H. There are more than seven million kids across America that are learning many life lessons, responsibility, how to have friendly competition and other life skills just like I am. I honestly believe that 4-H is something that anyone who has the chance should get involved in. I will never forget the pledge, “As a true 4-H’er, I pledge my Heart to clearer thinking, my Heart to greater loyalty, my Hands to larger service, and my Health to better living, for my club, my community, my country and my world”(4-H Pledge), it has always been apart of me and it always will. I am honored to be apart of such an remarkable organization.
