5.3 Time Management – Work File

Read the course resources in order to complete the following tasks.

Read the following quotations. In your own words, explain what each quotation means. (10 points each)

1. 1. "The amount of time available to you never changes." Only you can manage your time.

1. 2. "Learning to manage time is an investment in the future." If you learn to manage your time now, in the future it will be easy.

1. 3. "Before you plan how you will use your time, you need to set your priorities." Look at what is important before you set your schedule.

Using Course Resources answer the following questions. (10 points each)

1. 4. Discuss the three ways time is wasted and how this can be avoided. a. Distractions- can be avoided by putting anything that you get distracted by away.

b. Procrastination- reward yourself for completing a task and break the task up into several task.

c. Disorganization- set priorities by must do, important to do, and like to do.

1. 5. What are the 4 keys to time management?

a. Group activities together.

b. Finish one task before starting another.

c. Avoid interruptions.

d. Don’t waste short periods of time.

1. 6. Choose one of the keys to time management and discuss how you can apply it to your daily schedule. Finishing one task before starting another one would be a good one for me because I always try to multitask and it stresses me out if I don’t finish it that day.

1. 7. Discuss whether or not writing a list and keeping a calendar would make you more efficient and productive. Why or why not? I think having a calendar and writing a list would have me more productive because I always do things at random times, and I never have time to finish them, so having a schedule will make me more productive.

Setting priorities: Fill in the chart below with at least three tasks in each column.
First, set the priority of the task by assigning the highest priority task in each column with the number 1 and work down to the least important of the tasks being number 3.
Write a time schedule along with the priority of the task. (10 points each)

    Time. There never seems to be enough of it. Most managers experience time management problems that are exacerbated by an increasingly fast pace of life (Hafner, 2010). Throughout my career, I have always believed that next to personnel, time is the most precious resource. While I consider myself a mostly organized non-procrastinator who tends to prioritize tasks, I know that I am not unlike most managers and leaders who struggle with time management. Therefore, it came as little surprise to me that upon receiving feedback from the beginning of the semester class survey that the results revealed my lowest ratings were in the area of time management. My challenges with time management were once again exposed as a result of the Use-of-Time Diary assignment. Although the assignment only tracked three full business days (Jan 23-25) for a total of 72 hours, it indicated that my time was not used productively. This was further underscored by a general feeling of a lack of accomplishment at the end of each work day. In order to achieve greater granularity of the issues surrounding my time management struggle, I decided to extend my use of the time diary assignment for two additional work weeks (Jan 28 – Feb 8).…
