Seconds after my coach said "Never let the kid in the blue out of your sight," I felt a rush of adrenaline pervade through me. Her words made me not want to disappoint her. I am a quarter of a way through the 5K, yet numbness has already permeated my calves. Passing the guy in the blue is on my checklist for this meet. In order to achieve the goals set by my coach, I need to focus on every step and every breath so that every move is executed perfectly. I end up passing him near the halfway mark. By then the searing pain has welcomed itself into my legs again. As I am rounding off two miles, I gain sight of my coach again. She has more words of encouragement for me: "Don't let the kid in red out of your sight." By now my entire body is aching, but I manage to follow my coach's command. I overcome my opponent in red and actually end up passing numerous racers to finish the 5K. The short-term goals my coach set for me allowed me to hit a personal record during that 5K. I surpassed my past time

From the way we interact with each other to the environments we live in. Science has enabled families to keep in contact with each other from overseas and it has expanded the life spans of humans over the past two centuries. But just recently, I witnessed a detrimental lack of scientific impact during a service trip I took to the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. The community of Gregory Town, a place filled with charismatic, loving people, lacks clean water. Our youth group was warned against drinking the water because of its bacterial inhabitants. We had to ship water in order to drink. Something that needs to be implemented in the Caribbean is a water filtration system that reaches every community on every island. Being interested in the field of software development, I yearn for the opportunity to design the program that operates countless water filtration machines throughout the

As I ran that hill I began to cry because of the pain. I thought my legs were going to give out from underneath me. The pain I was feeling helped me take a few strides that caused me to stumble a little, but soon regained my composure. I was at the top. All that was left was one last final turn, and then the downhill. I could see the finish line in the distance and then started sprinting. Coach Rojas was screaming at me to keep going and not to stop. At this point, my heart was pounding rapidly. My body was worn down, hot and exhausted. Crossing the finish line was the only thing on my mind. For a moment, I blocked off from the race and thought about all the hard work that went into the season. I crossed the finish line and at that moment I knew that I had put my sweat and tears into this race. I couldn’t feel my legs, all I wanted was water. Soon after I heard that we won Second place in the district which was the best the team has won. I felt no pain at this point since I was part of a group of people who loved this sport and put effort into it. It gave me happiness to be part of a team that now was like my…

When I first began my running career, I saw little hope in becoming a good runner. It wasn’t until after cross country ended that I was told by my coach,”You have all the tools available to you, now use them.” At the time I didn’t understand what he meant, but when I finally understood it I used it as a motivator to push myself farther and farther. The support of my coaches coupled with the encouragement given by my teammates gave a me an even larger boost in confidence. Before my first relay I clearly remember hearing my teammates telling me not to undermine my ability by thinking about my injury. In that relay I ran the second fastest leg, a major step in the right direction. After that meet I began to see a major improvement over the previous track season, and with that knowledge I have put it to heart and began the climb to…

Cross-Country was coming up and I knew that I had to get back in shape of running, about three-five miles a day. I wanted to be ready for my coaches to be “woah” , in the first race in Cross-Country.I also wanted to set my P.R. - Personal Record- high up on the scale because I want to stand out and become the best I can be. With my confidence, Coach Klenke and Coach Puls saying running through my head.”RUN, RUN, RUN, even if you feel your feet hurting and legs killing you push through it, and keep going, feel more confident, you know you are doing it right when your brain wants you to stop, BUT DON'T!!!!” I began to set up where, and when, and how far I would be running.…

“If you don’t push now you’re not going to make it,” my legs were burning, “push Conroy! Now!” It was state sectionals, my final race, the 4x800 meter relay, and all I could hear was my coach’s voice screaming at me from the side of the track. I was running a great time, my best time of my season, but it felt like I was going to collapse. My lungs burned and with every breath I took I thought they were going to burst. I have been distance for track for five years and it has never been easy. “Whap!” A spiraling red dodge ball crashes into my face and suddenly I am awake. The outcries from the eighth-grade girls around me pull me back into the packed room full of 200 middle schoolers. As I look around I realize there is no place I would rather spend my Friday mornings than volunteering with somewhat smelly middle schoolers as a Campus Life leader. Here, I discovered my passion for working with middle school students. They helped me discover that I wanted to change my major from Elementary Education to Middle School Education. Here at UNK, I am a part of SEAN and participate in student directed one acts. These activities are a fun break from studying and I plan on continuing with these activities throughout my years here at UNK. In high school, I…

When I was eleven years old I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I had a hard time coping with the changes in my mood. Part of my healing process consisted of trying many different medications, therapies, and developing the desire to heal. During this time, friends I had for many years pushed me away, and although I felt alone and confused at times, I came out thriving. Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder thought to be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that can result in extreme swings in mood—from manic highs to depressive lows. To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must have experienced a high period (mania). Bipolar mania is described as an “extreme high,” or feeling unusually great. Most people with bipolar disorder when ill or when symptomatic experience more lows than highs. Unfortunately, the lows I experienced were so extreme that the friends I thought would be by my side through anything chose to follow other kids and use my disorder to bully me creating deeper depression. Initially, I felt stigmatized by my diagnosis. Most people I encountered either didn’t know what bipolar was or how to interact with someone suffering with the disorder. Teachers, peers, and family members had a hard time knowing what to say or how to act around me. I started to feel like I was no longer my own person but just one big disaster and my mood swings became even more extreme as a result. Eventually, I grew tired of feeling sorry for myself and began my quest for the right medication, vitamins, nutrition, psychological and spiritual health and wellbeing. I found my inner strength and courage. I put my energy into school, new friendships and family and started…

A friend recently told me “Don’t let the things you can’t control, control you”. I realized how much this small piece of advice relates to my life as an African American woman. I can’t control the fact that I don’t live with- or even know- my father. I can’t control how society perceives people of color. But I control what I do. I have discovered that I embody the ability to beat the odds given to a black, fatherless girl. I can be who I want to be with hard work and determination.…

I am ready to start a new chapter in my life and to take the next step to becoming a Registered Nurse. I have worked for the NHS for over 3 years now, and have been a Health Care Assistant for 16 months. Prior to this I worked as an Ambulance Care Assistant for East Midlands Ambulance Service. I have had experience in patient care from washing, bathing, monitoring vital signs, and working both in the community and in a hospital setting. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team has helped me effectively care for my patients and developed my communication skills in working with other NHS professionals. One of the most satisfying parts of my job now, and in my previous role is the direct patient contact. Developing trusting relationships and listening to them is very rewarding and helps me to get to know my patients, show empathy and maintain their dignity. I am used to shift working, working 7 days a week with various shift patterns, so this side of the role will not faze me.…
