had many wonderful experiences to volunteer for the community of Gretna. These experiences with I have also served at my church, Faith Westwood United Methodist at Sunday school, on mission trips, as well as at the children’s library.
At Campus Life, I lead a small group of eighth grade girls, and have been working with them since they were sixth graders. I offer my small group a safe space to talk about everything from God to school. Working with these wonderful girls has sparked a passion in me for working with middle school age students; I enjoy their energy and openness. Without volunteering at Campus Life, I would not be the person I am today, because it has opened my heart to a truly amazing age group of students.
At church, I have been working with children since I was in sixth grade.
I have been an assistant teacher, Vacation Bible School leader, and Acolyte leader. These positions have included teaching a small group of children from the age of three to ten about Jesus and being an altar helper or Acolyte. I have learned compassion working with these children that you cannot get anywhere else. Also at my church, I have gone on four mission trips. On these trips, I have done everything from making beds at a homeless shelter to setting up a firework tent during a thunderstorm. Through mission trips I have been given a servant’s heart and a love for serving.
I am hoping these experiences help me become a better middle school educator. Already in my career at UNK I have learned a lot about caring for my future students. Dr. Ziebarth-Bovill has taught me many ways to show my students the nurturing love of a good educator. I cannot wait to take more teaching classes to show my middle school students they have a caring adult who is passionate about their success. I have already experienced this feeling of pride in others’ success working with group of middle school girls who I watched them grow into beautiful freshmen
woman. In the future, I hope to still be able to combine my faith and passion for working with children of all ages. I want to be able to encourage students at the school where I work, but also in a more personal open environment. My plan is to keep helping with children and student ministries for as long as I am able. I have a passion for serving and helping people that I want to keep burning. It would also be great if I am still able to serve on mission trips later in life. It is an amazing feeling dedicating a week of your life to serving others.
