A dozen squealing, laughing little girls tugged my arms, legs and hands. They were so excited to show me their bedroom. Meeting all the orphans at the Colima, Mexico orphanage was very overwhelming and very emotional. At first, I felt very out of place, like seeing grass during a Michigan winter. All these kids surrounding me right now have no families and have nobody to love them. These kids were all beautiful in their own way and really knew how to make you smile without even trying. They were like flowers in a rundown parking lot. Beautiful but with a dark, sad background. Everytime they looked at you, you could see the excitement in their eyes.…

My life seemed to be going downhill faster than that bat that flew straight for my head. For about a year I lived in misery, living the life of a victim. Blaming everyone and everything for all that was going wrong with my life. I had lost what I thought was everything, my children, my home, my job and even stopped going to church. Then one day a friend of mine asked me to ride with her to a nearby town where her friend had just moved back from Dallas to. I reluctantly said yes and went on the hour drive to the middle of nowhere town. As we pulled up to the house of her friend I saw a beautiful young woman sitting on a wooden rocking chair with her arms in the air waving us down. Once we parked we sat on the porch with the friend and listened to her speak about all the great things God had been doing in her life since she surrendered all to Him. I sat there listening and arguing with myself on what it was I needed to do to get my life out of the rut it was in. I looked up at her and she caught my eye and said to me “God has called you to great things Katie, He just asks that you trust…

Determinants of health can include genetics, income, nutrition, education, social relationships, gender, access to health care services, and personal behaviors. While a child in a homeless situation may not have the ability to change their genetic makeup, gender, and ethnicity, these factors still affect homeless children in many ways. For example, genetic-related illness may sometimes be exacerbated in a bout of homelessness. Also, there is evidence that shows that African-American and Hispanic children have disproportionately higher rates of homelessness than those of other ethnicities. In addition to genetics and ethnicity, homeless children that are males of a certain age are often excluded from overnight temporary shelters.…

Nicole loved her job but working in a hospital wasn’t all fun and games it was hard work. Every day she woke up at six o’clock and worked a twelve-hour day. Some days were slow and other days were extremely busy. One day Nicole was sitting at her desk filling out paper work when a boy thirteen years old on a stretcher came in beaten with bruises and two broken legs. She was the nurse assigned to him. “It was the most terrible thing I have ever seen.” Nicole exclaimed. The boy was beaten with sticks by three boys in his school for being gay. Nicole could not believe that someone would do such a thing. She stayed with the boy the entire time he was in the hospital. She gave him stiches in his face and leg. The boy had to get casts put on both of his legs and was in a wheel chair for the next six months. I was strolling on the streets of New York City on my way to work as a science teacher at New York City Schools. I glared at the homeless people on the streets pondering, how did they get there? When I was younger there were many people living on the streets. Now that it is 2052 and I'm forty-two years old, the number of homeless people increased rapidly. I'm hoping I never end up like them. Eventually, I got to school and I went to my class. Like every day, I take a glimpse from the door and all twenty-three students were loud, throwing paper, and talking. I immediately went inside and yelled at them. For the rest of the day, I dealt with rambunctious kids.…

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. I’ve seen almost every part of this city and I’ve experienced many different aspects of it. So when the topic of homelessness comes up, I have a very soft spot in my heart for it. Being from New York City, I’ve seen homelessness in every single way. I’ve seen it on street corners, trains, abandoned buildings, and even public parks. When I was a child, I asked my mother why these people have no home, and she told me because they simply lost their way and it’s hard to find their way back. Since then, this has been my belief, that these people deserve to find their way back. People look at homelessness as an epidemic in the city, that’s only looking to get worse before it gets better. And while it’s very easy to just…

The moment I looked out the window of the car and my eyes turned to the row of homeless people weaving its way through the traffic begging for money, I jumped out of my seat. It was my first visit to India after leaving the country for the United States. The homeless people's’ hands were making weird gestures and thumping the windows of the honking cars. I could not digest what I was seeing! While reaching out to an old woman to give her some money, I thought about what non homeless people could do to help those without a home and basic needs. Then, I asked myself a question. Why not give them something that will be with them forever and help them out of their poverty and teach them valuable skills? After all, a mountain of…
