Americans to this day will never act or feel the same way as they once used to. What we did then and how we did it, we can no longer do now. It has been over twelve years since the United States went through one of the most horrific, terrifying tragedies in all of United States history. As we all know today, on September 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger airliners so they could be flown into buildings in suicide attacks. Two of those planes were intentionally crashed into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. For this reason, there has been an enormous amount of changes in the United States. The three major areas that have changed are the airport security, the government, and the psychological impact.…

Now as a senior on his way to graduate I can’t believe how quickly time has gone. I guess Ms. Burnett was right, senior year does fly by. Though his year was quick it was also difficult. Reason for that was because I was assigned one of the hardest projects I’ve ever had to do. That project was a thesis paper. My thesis paper was about a firefighter policy regarding first responders in 9/11. The paper helped me with my ability to investigate the world because I had to learn more about how 9/11 affected first responders and civilians. I also developed college and career readiness skills by being able to learn how to effectively cite any material from reliable sources. This skill will be extremely useful in future classes in college for thesis…

Nussbaum’s essay starts off with the general feelings of Americans after the events that occurred on September 11, 2001. With sympathetic feelings towards first responders, soldiers, families who lost loved ones, and “New York firefighters, that gay rugby player who helped bring down the fourth plane” (Nussbaum 784). But she goes on to describe that the hearts of the Americans are selfish and that they do not care about the innocent civilians of Afghanistan that have fallen victim from this conflict. She goes on to say that as Americans “our imaginations remain oriented to the local; indeed, this orientation is implicit in the unusual level of our alarm” (Nussbaum 1). Meaning that Americans only bother and care about themselves and live in a privileged land while the rest of the world goes on and still suffers. Nussbaum doesn’t angle this argument the right way. She should continue with more sympathy towards Americans and not…

The 9/11 attacks have most certainly changed America in a fundamental way. More specifically the way America sees and addresses its security. Before 9/11 I think most of America seen itself as a place safe from those that don’t share our beliefs. That we could and would be able to guard against any treat that would come along. 9/11 showed us how wrong we were. The changes are in no way are temporary, but have become a permanent fixture on how we handle foreign and domestic threats. Airport Security was increased to an extent that many people avoid airlines now because of the hassle of dealing with security. The Department of Homeland Security was created to stop and avoid future attacks. The question now is has this made us safer? I don’t…

September 11th was a horrible days in our history. The terrorist acts of 9/11 showed how unprepared The United State had been as a nation. People wondered, why is this happening? How is it possible that this could happen in America? What can be done so it never happens again? September 11th is the day people understood the concept that freedom isn’t free. People had a basic understanding of the word terrorism, however no one really believed that America could suffer the tragedy that it did. Fox asks if we want to be “cowardly and complacent or courageous and compassionate? What kind of country do we really want to be? Cold-hearted and calloused or caring and considerate?” (136). I do not think that many people would dispute that they want to be anything but courageous and compassionate. These are two fantastic traits that most people desire to have. The average human is willing to help out those in need, because they are compassionate, not because they are forced. As discussed in The Tragedy of American Compassion by Marvin Olasky, even the early Americans, in the 1600’s showed compassion by emphasizing hospitality to those suffering destitution because of disaster. While at times the compassion was considered fatigued in the United States, there were attempts to strengthen the American compassion against the storms to come; they stressed education of the charity-giving public. While, back in the 1600’s they did not donate money to different charities to help the poor, they donated what they could, which was a roof over their head and a place to sleep and maybe a meal or two. The wellbeing of our country has always been the utmost concern for many people, and helping those in need is a way to make the country…

When our country faced turmoil and natural disasters we waited til there was not enough time to save all souls. America has faced issues such as Katrina and 911 where the homeless were at lost then and are at lost now. FEMA, an American based organization, claiming to help all only helped a few. Americans gave their own people little money to help restore and rebuild the damages. Yet, when natural disasters occurred across seas, Americans gave billions of dollars to help contribute to the poor and homeless who were suffering. When will our own people come to the actualization that we need to help our own, that we have civilians…

The BP oil spill brought Americans in the gulf closer than they ever have before. Americans knew how important it was to devote their time helping in the recovery and cleanup processes. People volunteered to help clean up the tarball filled beaches. Tarballs are toxic byproducts of oil spills and they presented itself all over the Gulf Coast. Workers and cleanup crews worked together to use high-pressure hot water hoses to clean up the affected beaches, but the pressure washers caused more problems because the oil seemed to move deeper into the sand. This caused workers and volunteers to work together…
