The 9/11 attacks were not the first attacks of the 21st century; in 2000, the bombing of the USS Cole occurred. A couple of events that led up to the 9/11 attacks include the bombing of the United States Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon in 1983 and the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993.
The magnitude of this attack was felt around the world. Al-Queda’s attack on America this time was successful on multiple levels. The fear American’s
felt was astronomical; furthermore, the attacks produced a prejudice against all Muslims.
President George W. Bush was the commander in chief during this time. His actions were swift, bold and precise; moreover, he informed the world by his actions that America would not tolerate such violence on the home front. He proposed the Homeland Security Act in June 2002, Congress passed the act in November 2002. Eventually the Department of Homeland Security would be the umbrella for more than twenty different agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration better known as TSA. (DHS.gov 2015).
I feel the liberty America was built on has been fractured due to continued growth of the federal government; moreover, the agencies and regulations will likely remain in place. Through the decades Americans have developed a growing mistrust in the federal government; the federal spending and deficit continues to grow. Finally, American families are paying an enormous amount in federal taxes to help offset the government spending. America needs to be smart in whom we elect as our next president; our economy, security, and foreign policy hinges on the upcoming election.
A positive result from the attacks was a united bipartisan congress. Although the unity was short lived; it proved that in times of crisis the federal government will pull together for the good of the country.
