Annie Oakley’s real name was Phoebe Ann Moses.She was born on August 13, 1860 in Darke County, Ohio on a small farm with her parents Jacob and Susan Moses and her brothers and sisters.When she was young she would go out into the woods and watch her father hunt. She always wanted to shoot her father's gun. Tragically, her father died when she was only five years old.
1871-1873
When her father died she was sent to the Darke County Infirmary when she was nine.The owners of the infirmary said she always did her best. Unfortunately, the nice comment reached the wrong ears. A man came by to get her and said that him and his wife would take good care of her and give her good education and plenty to eat. Sadly, they didn’t.They
gave her nothing to eat and treated Annie like a slave putting her to work early in the morning to late at night for two years. Annie called the couple “ the wolves”. When the couple were gone one day she ran away back to the infirmary to pack up her things and go back her house with her mom. Her mom did remarry, but fell ill, so Annie Oakley’s family was poor again.
1876
Annie Oakley had a great shot. Frank Butler was a great shooter himself. Part of his act was to shot against people, and he was very surprised when a little fifteen year old stepped up to shot against him. At the end of the contest it Annie had a score of 24 out of 25. Frank had a score of 24 out of 25. They both had one more shot. It was Frank’s turn.He shot and missed. Annie shot and made it. She had a perfect score of 25 out of 25. Annie won the contest and won Frank’s heart. Less than a year later they got married. The court said the marriage certificate said he married in June 20,1882. The certificate said he possibly hadn’t legally divorced his first wife
1885
Annie Oakley wanted to try out for The Wild West Show, but when Buffalo Bill turned them down.So, Annie decided to her act on a baseball field. A man came outside on the baseball field and asked if she had any pictures with her gun. The man was Buffalo Bill’s partner. He hired her right off the bat.
1887
Annie Oakley went to England to go to Victoria’s Golden Jubilee to perform. Queen Victoria had been wearing black for seventeen years and was never very happy since her husband died, but when Annie preformed she started to have a good time
1903 - 1910
In 1903 newspapers accused Annie of drug use and said the the famous shooter was in prison. Annie was so scared. She immediately wrote to the newspaper and said she didn’t drink and she wasn’t in jail. The newspaper apologized but Annie was not satisfied. She did not want everyone to think she was drinking. People thought she drank ,so she appeared in trile at the Courthouse. The judge did not believe her. She kept with the press until many years later until 1910 when it was all settled.
1917
Annie Oakley gave free shooting lessons 15,000 woman over the years.She would always think woman should rely on themselves. Overtime she went to many army camps to teach the men to shoot when World War l was going on. Also, she raised money for the Red Cross, veterans’ hospitals, and orphans.
1926
When Annie Oakley was crossing through Florida she was in a bad car accident. She never got well and died the same year. The date was November 3, 1926. Frank Butler and Annie Oakley are buried next to each other in Ohio a little while away from where she was born.
