While she was being born her father was off about to make a decision that would be crucial to her in the development as a woman and as a writer; they moved in 1892 to Eatonville, Florida, an all-black town. The oil and electric had been shut off and I needed to do what was best for them all. Jim, however, would not hear of it! He was so angry with me when he got home and saw the kids gone. I felt awful when I discovered what he had promised them, but I had to do something! I did what I had to do in order to keep them healthy and safe. He swallowed whatever pride he had and asked his old boxing buddies for change to help pay off the bills and bring the children back to us. He is so good with them. The kids love him so dearly.
