The first Sheriffs were created as peace keepers in England by the William the Conqueror during the 11th century originally called the “shire reeve”. However some argue that the position was available during Roman occupation of England. After the American Revolution, the newly created United States decided to adopt the English law and legal institutions. Another significance of the Sheriff is that it was the first county office established in the United States. The story of Ohio’s Sheriffs is just as interesting. Sheriffs before 1803 were appointed by the first Colonial Governor of the Northwest Territory. The first High Ohio Sheriff was Colonel Ebenezer Sproat, he was appointed to the position in 1788. His jurisdiction covered all of Washington County, which today is from the Ohio River to Lake Erie. The monthly salary for this career ranges from $3,800 to $4,600. The yearly salary for the career is ranged from $40,000 to $50,000 depending on your location. And if you receive advancement to a higher position such as Captain or Supervisor you are given a pay increase of $10,000. The nature of the job is very interesting. Some days Deputies will be in the office all day working on paperwork, other days they will be on patrol in their jurisdiction, or responding to a crime, or accident. Also the benefits for this career are very adequate. Employees are given benefits in health care and dental. Another benefit of this career is that you are guaranteed fifteen days of vacation for every month worked, so if you have children you will have time to be around them and support them. Also all Deputy Sheriffs are eligible for a pay increase of 15% of their starting salary. However with benefits come some hazards. And as a Deputy Sheriff there are always plenty. Some of the hazards of the job include the working with and around firearms, having the potential of mace being blown back on to you, being attacked by a lethal weapon, being injured in an accident, and the overwhelming possibility of being killed in the line of
