A Child Psychiatrist Paper

The career that I chose for this paper is a child psychiatrist. A child psychiatrist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating behavioral and thought disorders in children. A child psychiatrist uses his/her knowledge on many factors including biological and psychological factors, in order to devise a treatment plan for a child with behavior and thought disorders. A psychiatrist may devise a treatment plan that may involve just your child, your family, or another group. A treatment plan may either include a medication or a behavioral therapy, in order to reduce negative behaviors. A child psychiatrist can also act as an advocate for your child with other doctors, school professionals, agencies, or other organizations. They deal
with the emotions of children. To become a child psychiatrist, you must have a Doctor of Medicine degree. The degree field will be psychiatry with a specialization in pediatrics. You must have four years of residency training. You must have a state medical license and board certification in general psychiatry. Some key skills that a psychiatrist should have is communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, good judgement and decision making skills, empathy, and patience. The first step to becoming a child psychiatrist is getting a Bachelorś degree. Some courses that people have to take when trying to be a child psychiatrist include general biology, anatomy, genetics, biochemistry, organic chemistry. Students who want to be a child psychiatrist have to get into medical school. They have to pass the Medical College Admission Test, which evaluates a studentś knowledge of the sciences and liberal arts, as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Medical school usually consists of a four year program. The first two years involve classroom and laboratory instruction, covering topics such as anatomy, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, pharmacology and biochemistry. The last two years of medical school are dedicated to supervised clinical experience. Potential child psychiatrists must be accepted into a certified psychiatric internship and residency program.
