Balthasar, Romeo’s servant, comes from Verona to tell him that Juliet is dead and she lies in the Capulet’s tomb. Even though this is not true, Romeo has no idea, so he decides to go back to Verona so he can die next to Juliet. He sets out to find a pharmacist who will sell him a potion which Romeo thinks will kill him.
[Enter Romeo]
ROMEO: Ah me! If I can trust the truth of sleep, My dreams presage something joyful is about to happen! I dreamt my Juliet came and found me dead, and brought me back to life with kisses in my lips.
[Enter Romeo’s servant, Balthasar]
Ah, Balthasar! News from Verona? How is my lady doing?
BALTHASAR: Oh Romeo, I apologize. Her body lies dead in the Capulet’s tomb, but her soul is …show more content…
with the angels.
ROMEO: Is it really true? Then I curse you, stars! I will leave her for Verona tonight to see my dear lady.
BALTHASAR: Sir, Please have patience. Your looks are pale and wild as if you’re going to harm yourself.
ROMEO: Tush, you’re wrong.
[Balthasar Exits]
Oh my Juliet, I will lie with you tonight. Let’s see how harmful thoughts come quickly to the minds of sad, desperate men! I remember a pharmacist who lives close. He makes drugs from herbs. He looks poor and miserable. I said to myself, “If a man needed some poison”—which would immediately kill you—“here is a miserable, poor wretch who’d sell it to him.” But this poor man must sell it to me. As I remember, this should be the house. Today’s a holiday, so the beggar’s shop is shut. Hey! Pharmacist!
[Enter Apothecary]
APOTHECARY: Who is that calling so loud?
ROMEO: Come here. I see that you are poor. Here are forty ducats. I need a potion so strong that the person who takes it dies instantly.
APOTHECARY: I do indeed have deadly potions like that, but it’s against the law, and the penalty is death.
ROMEO: You’re this poor and are still afraid to die?
I can see it in your eyes that you are hungry. This world is not your friend, and trust me, neither is the law. The world does not make laws to make you rich. So do not be poor and break the law, take this money.
APOTHECARY: I will take the money because I’m poor, not because I chose to.
[Gives ROMEO poison] Put this in any liquid you want and drink it. No matter your strength, it will kill you instantly.
ROMEO: [Gives APOTHECARY money] There is your gold. I will take this mixture, to where Juliet lies dead. There is where I must use it.
[They Exit]
[Romeo Enters the Tomb]
(Speaking to the tomb) You evil mouth of death! You have eaten up the most lovely creature on this earth! Now I am going to force you to eat another body. [ROMEO begins to open the tomb]
[Paris Enters]
PARIS: I can’t let him do this. Romeo, I refuse your request! I’m going to arrest you as a criminal.
ROMEO: Don’t make me bite my thumb at you! Let’s fight! [Romeo and Paris fight]
PARIS: Oh no, I have been killed! Screw you Romeo! [Paris Dies]
[Romeo opens tomb to reveal Juliet inside]
ROMEO: Oh my love! Not even dead are you less beautiful. My dear Juliet do not worry, I will stay with you, I will never leave this
tomb
[Romeo kisses Juliet and just as he is about to drink the potion, she wakes up]
Juliet! Oh my dear Juliet! You are alive! Oh my love!
JULIET: Oh Romeo, My love! You saved me! Has it been two days already?
ROMEO: My dear, what are you talking about?
JULIET: Romeo, you know I wasn’t actually dead correct? I was just in a deep sleep. Did you not get my letter from Friar?
ROMEO: I received no such thing.
JULIET: Oh who cares, the important thing is we are together at last, and no one can change the love we have for eachother.
[Romeo and Juliet share a kiss]
