A Defining Moment
Looking down at the freshly made, crisp ice, I saw a young boy holding onto the wall. He looked terrified so I decided to help him. I got a walker from the side of the ice and brought it to him. He held onto it and I skated around pushing him in front of me, he seemed to be having fun with the smile plastered on his face. We skated in circles and zipped around the ice. The wind was blowing through our locks, we most likely looked like lions that just woke up from a nap. After I made sure he was comfortable, I slowly removed his grip from the walker and held him. He was nervous when I removed him from the support, but I calmed his nerves by telling him I would not let him fall. I moved the walker out of his way and had him march across the ice as I held his shoulders. After a good ten minutes of the marching I asked him if he could try by himself. He certainly had his balance down. I stood him up and went a couple feet across the ice from him and he wobbled toward me all by himself. I was as proud as a mother. I knew I would never forget the moment when the first person I helped, skated all by themself. Taking in the smell of pure freshness and the feel of smooth ice with no bumps. The arena filled with …show more content…
The Learn to Skate was where I first learned how to skate and I was thankful for that, I decided it would be nice to give back. From how much fun and learning experiences I experienced myself I wouldn’t change any part of my experience besides how long I volunteered for. I helped kids learn how to skate from eighth grade until my freshman year. I wished that I still had the time in my schedule to be able to continue volunteering. It helped me realize how grateful I am that my mom signed me up for Learn to Skate when I was young. Not only am I grateful but I want to give other kids the chance I had to learn to love a sport. The best part was seeing how happy they got when they learned something

When I was volunteering at the SOAR agency, I had been assigned two different programs. The first one was called Adaptive Learn to Skate and was held at the Pepsi Ice Arena on Tuesdays from February 19th to April 2nd from 4:45-5:50. It was with younger kids from ages 8-12 with different severity levels of autism. Some were very high functioning and some were not. The kid I was assigned with was named Ben. He did not talk at all but I could communicate to him through visual and touch signals. The program hired two ice skating assistants to help the kids learn how to skate. The volunteers were mainly just there to serve as help with the kids posture and balance and to make sure they didn’t fall too hard. The kids were wearing a seatbelt around their waist that us volunteers were holding the entire time just incase one of them takes a tumble. Ben was not the best skater in the world obviously but I can say with pride that we fell down the less than anyone else and their partners! That being said, he was a little on the heavier side. Sometimes it was very hard when I was exhausted or tired to keep him from falling when he would use his whole weight against me. He never said any words to me but as we were skating I continually reinforced him and told him that he was doing an excellent job and to keep it…

All Martina ever wanted was to learn how to ride a skateboard . Despite Martina´s pleading, any attempt at using her older brother’s board would invite a shrieking response. “Don’t touch that!”, he would shout. Seeing her determination, Martina’s mother bought her a skateboard. Practicing secretly every day, Martina built her skills and her confidence. When she finally felt ready to prove her ability, Martina asked one last time to use her brother’s board. Surprisingly, he gave in to the request but with little encouragement. “Okay, little girl, give it your best shot”, he laughed. Martina smiled as her hands gripped the rough edges of the board. She knew she would skate away his sarcasm.…

“Fix it.” I said really angrily he knew I was mad and told me there was no way to fix it the axle was bent and broken. At that point I was just in rage, I looked at him in the face and pointed at him saying “This is why you should have kept the kiddies rink so this wouldn’t happen, but now we are here because you wanted to make an extra buck. Don’t expect me to be coming back anytime soon.” And with that I left and went to bennies house. He was able to fix my skate temporarily till I could get some new ones ordered. Since the age of five sports have been my life. I have played just about every sport; basketball, baseball, soccer, football, lacrosse, and hockey. There have been numerous takeaways from playing all of these sports through out my life that have shaped me to be the individual that I am today. First sport I ever played was soccer and I was more of a fan of running around the field and not giving a care in the world to the soccer ball, so turns out that sport was not for me. Next sport up, basketball, this sport was a little bit easier for me due to the sole fact that I was taller than everyone else at the age of five.…

Ever since I can remember I spent almost ever y day at my Grandparents house. They live right down the road from my family and me, and that is how they got the title “Grandma and Grandpa down the road”. They lived in a small house three bedrooms, one bathroom, and a small living room with a fire place that can worm the coldest heart. And in their back yard stood a shed filled with old farm equipment and stray cats with their kittens that I would try to catch every day. They are now both 78 years old and sadly not very healthy. My grandpa was diagnosed with lung cancer in October, and it changed my grandpa’s life, my family’s life, and my life.…

My Most pivotal moment in my life was when I almost got shot. I know you’re probably thinking I’m crazy because how can almost getting shot be a good thing? Well I’m going to tell you why. It all started on July 31, 2015 me and all my cousins were sitting in the house, and they decided that we should go out. I honestly didn’t want to go but they forced me. That night we went to a club, had fun until the night was over. We started leaving the club and as we were walking toward the parking lot a group of guys just started fighting out of the where. It got crazy and chaotic quick. The security from the club came running outside trying to break up the fight; eventually they did. At that point we thought everything was over so we left and went to…

I have been skating since I was four, barely clinging on to the walls back then. My dad used to take my sister Daisy and me to a skating rink almost every weekend in the winter. We taught ourselves how to skate fast, stop, and whatever else. However, it wasn’t until the end of seventh grade that we finally decided to take lessons. One March morning my dad drove us to an unknown rink. Pulling our skating bags onto the bleachers to tie them, we looked around at the busy rink. Finally it was time to go on. I hesitantly skated on to the ice, my sister a few strokes behind me. A girl in front of me wobbled towards her coach, her head barely as high as my knee. Pausing to look around the rink, I noticed an ocean of children much shorter than I, either jumping or spinning expertly. I looked over at Daisy, noticing that she and I stuck out, being the same height as the coaches. Daisy looked both confused and hopeless, also noticing the age gap and the skills of many of the younger kids. My sister and I were clearly…
