Namit Arora promotes his views on the meat industry in regards to the treatment of animals. He details the brutal and horrific experiences that each animal must endure for the sole purpose of ending up on someone’s plate. Arora analyzes society’s back-handedness in feeling sorrow and care for only specific animals. Arora develops ideas ¬¬that society is being insincere in our care for animals, when we only put up certain animals to idolize, and have created a system which kills animals for our demands. Arora’s…

Starting with the grasslands in the plains of eastern Colorado elevation around 4,500 feet, also known as the short-grass prairie, this ecosystem is very dry and flat. "The summers are sunny and hot, and the winters are windy and cold. Average precipitation is about 14 inches a year, and most of this falls in the spring and summer (mesastate.edu)." Plants such as western wheatgrass (Triticum), cactus (Cactaceae), buffalo grass (Buchloe dactyloides), coneflower (Echinacea rudbeckia ratibida), and sage (Salvia officinalis), thrive in this environment. Trees are not able to grow in this ecosystem because of the dryness and soil type. This is a challenge for the plants and animals that live here, because there is no protection from weather or predators. These grasslands are maintained by fire. However, different types of birds such as larks (Alaudidae), hawks (Accipitridae buteoninae), and eagles (Buteoninae), live here. They adapt to their surroundings and some make nests along the ground. Other animals that reside in this ecosystem are the jack-tailed rabbits (Lepus), black tailed prairie dogs…
According to the climatograms that we were given our local climatogram most resembled the mid latitude (temperate) grassland biome of Lawrence, Kansas . I arrived at this conclusion by comparing the two climatogram graphs and noticing a striking resemblance. The precipitation and temperature were almost exactly the same. Although they have similar qualities, the two climatograms also have many distinct differences. In our local biome we can observe that there is more rain in the summer months. We also that the temperature in the Temperate Grassland is usually more warmer especially during the summer months. As you can clearly see, there are many differences between the two biomes, however there are are many differences. In both the biomes, the temperature during the winter months is almost exactly the same. Based on this assumption we can infer that the animals who live in this area have to be the same. After looking at the differences and similarities in the two closley related biomes, we will now look at some differences between the tropical rainforest biome and the desert biome. When we observe the temperature and the precipitation of the two biomes we can make some conclusions as to what type of animals live there. In the tropical rainforest the types of animals that live there have to need lots of water and a warm temperature year round. When you go to the desert the animals that live there are able to survive on little amounts of water and can also survive extreme tempratures. When we look at our own biome in Northeastern Illinois we can see that the types of animals that live here need a steady supply of water and the plants need the warm temprature (sun) in order to survive. They should be able to survive or be dormant during extreme cold tempratures in the winter months. As you can see there are many differences as well similarities between the two biomes and we can also recognize the type of animals that live in…
Justin Le Ms. Jackson ERWC English 28 October 2014 Animal Bill of Rights Despite our genetic makeup and ability, each living organism still obtains the ability to partake in the vast contribution towards this world. We as humans should be proactive in our role of establishing and maintaining a fine balance of life. A prominent responsibility we possess is to regard all living beings as equals.…
The preparation and process in which our food is made are often taken for granted. Today, consumers assume that their food was prepared in a clean and humane way. Just some hundred years ago, however, this was not the case. Even in the United States, food was being prepared in conditions that were unthinkable to the common citizen. How did we go from a system that had so little oversight to one of almost unthinkable supervision by the government? The answer came via an enterprising young writer named Upton Sinclair. Sinclair’s publication, The Jungle, shined a light into the dark and dreary life of a meat packer in Chicago. The Jungle horrified and disgusted readers. The book even had implications on the federal level. President Theodore Roosevelt,…
Animal testing is cruel and barbaric. In the article "A change of heart about animals" by Jeremy Rifkin, featured in the los Angeles Times, Rifkin discussed how scientists have discovered that animals are not far different from humans. The studies show that animals have similar emotions and reactions when experiencing such emotions in times of distress or fear. Despite these finding, animals are still continually tested on for products and other experiments in order to see what the result would be.…
The Native Americans were the first to do many things before the arrival of the white man. One of which was thinking through nature. They believed that the grandmother, Mother Earth, was capable of providing all the answers needed in life. And all you had to do to find them, was to open your eyes and look around. There is an old Winnebago saying that goes like this, “Of all the plants that cover the earth and lie like a fringe of hair upon the body of our grandmother, try to obtain knowledge that you may be strengthened in life”. Years later a movement would arise in the newfound settlers of the land that paralleled those beliefs, transcendentalism. Henry David Thoreau for the commonwealth's wilderness to experience this himself. As did Christopher McCandless, albeit with a far more tragic finale. Both found their own answers to the age old question. But it is up to the readers of their findings to decide what the real answer is.…
In "The Case for Animal Rights," Tom Regan writes about his beliefs regarding animal rights. Regan states the animal rights movement is committed to a number of goals, including: "the total abolition of the use of animals in science; the total dissolution of commercial animal agriculture; and the total elimination of commercial and sport hunting and trapping. Regan goes on and tells us the "fundamental wrong is the system that allows us to view animals as our resources, here for us--to be eaten, or surgically manipulated, or exploited for sport or money." Once people accept this view of animals being here for our resources, they believe what harms the animal doesn't really matter. Regan explains that in order to have this changed, people must change their beliefs. If enough people, especially people that hold a public office, change their beliefs, there can be laws made to protect the rights of animals.…
Humans are on the very top of the food chain, they have the supremecy over everything and anything, including wild animals. Wildlife that will never be in their natural habitat, and live their entire life in an artificial enclosure. Where they live out their lives in fear, and with all eyes on them (Carnivores in Captivity.) Many activists try to shut down zoos, and find any evidence of cruelty they possibly can to do so. Although the activists are unsuccessful, the attention needs to be diverted to the existing roadside zoos. Tony the tiger suffers everyday of his life in a cage that is not big enough for him to lie down in, along with other tigers. Some of the tigers end up dying from the toxic fumes of the gas and diesel (Tigers in America.) Human beings who run roadside zoos, know that they aren’t providing the necessary amount of care for animals that do not deserve to live in captivity. Some of the zoo owners are only in it for the profit, so they breed and bring in baby animals to attract more visitors. While other zoo owners actually care about…
Humans are descendents of other animals. I believe that over time animals change to fit the needs of their environments, and that is how after a long span of time humans came to be. Humans could be described as super-domesticated animals because they act like other domesticated animals. Humans are superior because they have more power and are more advanced than the other domesticated animals.…
Often times a person’s wishes do not match up with what fate has in store for them. In the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, one witnesses the trials and tribulations of two women morphed by circumstance and war. Khaled Hosseini expertly illustrates what it means to search for justice that both Mariam and, specifically, Laila try to do as women in Afghanistan during a time of war. Through the deaths of loved ones and an abusive marriage, Laila comes to realize that she does not always have to rely on herself in order to live by the moral standards and justices she swears by.…
