explains the benefits of complementary treatments such as meditation, acupuncture, message, and meditation, and the advantages each of these treatments, and more have on treating patients with chronic diseases, such as HIV. Contrarily ABC series of Complementary Medicine also explains the lack of evidence we have to prove complementary medicine is helpful. The ABC series of Complementary Medicine gives great insight to the many uses of complementary medicine, and how traditional medicine and complementary medicine can work together harmoniously. However this series greatly lacks knowledge in the many benefits of using complementary medicine. Furthermore why is “complementary” medicine only helpful when it is packaged with traditional medicine, rather then thought of as alternative medicine in some cases. When I was 20 years old I went through a very stressful time in my life.
I immediately started to feel the effects my stress levels were causing my body. I suffered from a constant headache that would rarely go away with pain killers. I did not sleep well, and I found I was always anxious and depressed. My mom and sisters urged me to see a doctor and get on an antidepressant to help me deal with the events going on in my life. I ended up seeing a doctor and talked to her about my problems. Medication was the only solution she had to offer me. I was reluctant on starting on a “happy pill” but I decided it was worth a shot. I didn’t like the way I felt on the medication. I did not feel like my old self, I felt numb to emotions. I decided to stop taking the pills and start on a mediation routine every night. I started to learn about mindfulness and living in the present, not dwelling on the past and future. It did not take long before I started to see a real change in my life. As I kept going forward, I soon became happy again. I now feel so strongly about the benefits of mediation and mindfulness. I wish so badly that more traditional doctors would practice complementary medicine because I know personally the positive effects it could make for …show more content…
people. What I believe the ABC series of Complementary Medicine is trying to say throughout this piece is that complementary medicine may be beneficial, but should be practiced with caution due to the lack of research we have on it. I can see why people are afraid of complementary medicine sometimes. There have been stories of different celebrities who try to cure their cancer, or other terminal diseases though holistic healing, and end up dead when maybe they could have been saved through conventional medication, and treatments. The great thing about complementary medicine is that it is catered to an individual needs, wether it is acupuncture, message, or herb combining to make medicine.
According to the ABC series of Complementary Medicine: “Herbal practitioners take extensive case histories and perform a physical examination. Patients are asked to describe their medical history and current symptoms. Particular attention is paid to the state of everyday processes such as appetite, digestion, urination, defecation, and sleep.” Then patients are prescribed a personalized combination of herbs to best treat their symptoms. According to ABC series of Complementary Medicine plant extracts have shown to have many effects in treating a variety of illnesses with little to no side
effects. Although The ABC series of Complementary medicine states that there is a great lack of evidence and research on the safety of complementary medicine, surely the stories of the thousands of people who's lives have been improved by alternative, or complementary medicine is proof enough of the many benefits it provides. Also, Why is extensive research on complementary medicine needed when there are little to no adverse effects from natural treatments. When it comes to complementary medicine almost always it will either help or it will not, rarely will there be a negative effect. This is because it is never invasive or toxic. In conclusion I want to emphasis that there are doctors out there that will incorporate complementary medicine into their practice, and it should benefit all of us to find someone who will do that. This will encourage the growth of complementary medicine in the modern world of medicine we have today. The best treatments come from modern medicine and complementary medicine working together to find the right treatment for you. This may mean less traditional medicine, and more holistic, or vis versa, or maybe you will only need one of the other in some cases. Either way complementary medicine is, and should be treated as more then a “last hope” as it is for many which was stated by ABC series of Complementary Medicine.
